At the beginning of Franco's rebellion, in northern regions of spain ten-thousands of catholics from the countryside volunteered to fight the communist threats. They were called "requetés", or volunteers. They were peasants, men of the countryside, catholic and natinalist. Their most identificable item was the so called "detente" a handmade patch with the Holy Hearth of Jesus. All of them wore it on their shirts. These volunteers, accompanied by falangists, quickly gain control fo villages in northern regions, especially in Navarrea, where in the first days of war they were about 25 000. They fought a crusade and had an outstanding morale. Later they integrated into carlist forces and got professional equipment.
