Well, the old troop tree in native was that you could upgrade Infantry soldiers into Sergeants. In Scaedumar 2, the Infantry tier is now replaced by the Heavy Infantry tier, with upgrade paths for Armored Sergeants or Pikemen.
Keep in mind that in this mod there isn't the 'most upgraded troop = the best'. I've reworked all the troops to give them a role. Swadian Armored Sergeants now have a two handed greatsword, but not shield. (Mixing them with the other soldiers is the best choice - or they'll die against ranged enemies)
The pikemen in my mod will carry only the pike/poleaxe (justified by the weight) and thus will require other troops to have them protected.
Some soldiers have heraldic mail (downgraded for balance) so that you can droll seeing your banner on your troops.

No variety beyond black & white? (Though I'd imagine that's just the heraldry.) Perhaps some variation on the shields, and maybe more helmets?
