Realism: Invictus is the Beyond the Sword version of the Civilization 4 mod that was formerly known “Total Realism” when it was being developed for Warlords expansion pack of Civilization 4. Our mod has been with Civ since the earliest days; it was, back when it was called just “Realism”, among the first comprehensive modpacks seeking to rebalance the game. For over a decade now, the mod continues its life and its evolution. For detailed statistics on what the mod adds, please check the features section.

One of the best and long-lived mods.

Overall this is the absolute best mod for the best Civilization game. This is easily my most played mod for any game.

Realism Invictus greatly improves the general gameplay and adds large amount of new content. The combat improvements in particular are absolutely stellar and make Civ IV combat far more interesting and engaging.

Unlike many other large mods, the mod doesn't overextend itself either. There are just enough new techs and new content to keep things interesting and varied without completely overwhelming the player.

It's a great mod.
But not just because of the all mechanics, graphical improvements or other little things, but because it made Civlilization a interesting and challenging game.
I can't say, that I'm an expert in this game, but it was quite easy to win without much effort, even on 'hard' difficulties. I was able to win easily with a minimal amount of management.
But after I player first time this piece of art I understood, how lame was I. The thing that knocked me down the most was the barbarian invasion (mostly because it happener in early-game, while I was totally unprepared). Suddenly a dozen of enemies per turn were attacking my cities letting me die in pains after 10-15 turns.
It was so awesome, because (after many, many tries) I actually learned to predict it and prepare my armies. It might not sound awesome, but just the fact, that you can lose so easily, and both learn some complicated strategies and have fun with it, is great.
Many peapole can say 'but it was in the vanilla game too'. It's true, but it wasn't such a breakthrought like here, and the history teaches us, that civilizations based more on such breakthroughts, than on actual evolution.
And the songs are great. There is no great game without great music.

Best historical CIV mod ever. One of my personal favorite game mods in general. Year after year, I keep returning and some update always pleasantly surprises me. Thanks!

One of the best mod for Civilization IV.

Great mod. Just love it!

Amazing mod. Improves practically every aspect of the game and adds great depth to the progress of history. The scope of humanity's progress is already well developed in Civ4 (probably best of the series), but this mod takes it to a totally new level. For example, Religion is no longer a set of names and icons, but instead now Religions have their strengths and their weaknesses. The AI is much smarter, but thankfully the developers have made the game accessible to players such as myself, but retaining the easier levels.

You must play this mod!

Detailed, balanced, historically accurate, extreme depth, new factions and mechanics. It's great. Everything a mod should be. I really appreciate the work on this. Probably my fav mod. Great work!

At first, I thought this mod took itself too seriously, what with leader weaknesses and almost complete lack of alternate tech paths. But then I started playing it again. It's the largest mod to not include future-era stuff, which on second examination is a strength because it doesn't overexert itself. Most importantly, Invictus has the deepest combat system of ANY Civ game before or since. If we're lucky, Firaxis takes notes for Civ VI.

And War Elephants. Woe to whoever has to fight them off.

The Best Civ4 mod out there that is close to history while still being true to gameplay.
