How can the ship at the start be sailing forward when the wind and flags are blowing backwards? ;)
Look at the Stays'ls. They help a ship go much deeper into the wind than it could without them.
The majority of the sail unfurled however is the main sails, and the stays are small in proportion to a ship that size. The wind would catch the main sails more than the stays though so it would be going backwards wouldnt it?
