Mossflower Total War is a fan modification for Total War Medieval 2: Kingdoms being made by FleshEatingBeans and a small team of dedicated contributors. We aim to re-create the feeling of cult-classic Redwall novels by Brian Jacques in the medium of a civilization-building and tactical combat video game.

New faction & models, finished stratmap, writing, music.

Posted by on

Hello! This is FEB. This is the joint devlog for January and February. Why? I was busy getting my shit together and catching up on very important IRL things like staying socialized, housed and employed. It involved a LOT of writing, so I got pretty much filled up on creative work at my actual job. Now when that’s out of the way, I can return to what makes life worth living: arming cartoon animals with medieval weaponry.

First off, I’ve started on some new stratmap models, including diplomats, priests, merchants and spies for Redwall. They are a bit janky, but generally work and will require a little skeleton tweak before a full release.

PS: didn't make it into a previous screenshot, new stratmap banners:

I have finished off the bare-bones version of the strategic map. Figuring out what to put east of Redwall is kind of tough due to how little happens in that area during the books, but some of the more lore-oriented members of the team suggested some great options. The nest step is to populate the map with factions, put rebels into settlements, and test it.

The goal here is to have Cluny attack Redwall as quickly as possible and stay hell-bent on destroying the faction before he even starts to think about attacking anyone else. This will probably involve blocking his AI from declaring war on most factions in the first, say, 15 turns of the campaign.

Wonderful Tarnfalk helped with writing flavor text for future script. Right now we are aiming at a short, concise style of presentation with a tiny bit of descriptive flair characteristics of Redwall novels. Did you know the very first one was written for blind kids and included a lot of descriptions of smells, sounds, tactile sensation and kinestetics? This is what we want to capture.

I’ve started on a roster for GUOSIM (the guerilla shrew faction inhabiting the bottom of the map). Their units will be fast, light shrew infantry with hide_anywhere tag, bolstered by excellent otter javelins and tough hedgehog spear/crossbow infantry. Overall, I am aiming at a people-who-live-on-boats vibe with these guys.

I have also revised designs for early Redwall units, aiming for less uniform shields and weapons. Here's Redwall Volunteers as an example. Earlier screenshots will serve as a basisi for an armor upgrade for these guys.

Finally, showeled through a BUNCH of music to put into the mod. Turns out finding songs that are right for Redwall is tough! Right now I am trying to go off the cartoon soundtrack, I find it wonderful.

See you guys in March!
