I've been playing a campaign with this faction since the last patch came out. It's great fun, you get to retake Greece on your way to Constantinople to topple the Latin Empire. Maybe make some friends along the way.
Then start retaking the empire bit by bit, first eliminating other byzantine factions who might contest your claim and then go on the offensive against the Sultanate.

I was curious if there was any way to add unit descriptions for players to get some background on some of the more interesting units in the mod. I worked with the Great War team for Napoleon Total War to do this, and it was a fun addition for historical background. It would be a big task, but maybe just start with a few. Id be happy to help, just send me a message and we can figure it out.

The Byzantines being Romans had no difficulty producing texts in Latin in their diplomatic correspondence. Some such Latin texts survive also from this period. In them one can find how the Byzantines would write their own terms in Latin with Latin characters. In addition, they had not heard of Modern Demotic Greek and used their own grammar. Just looking at the names of the units, some of them look out of place, non-contemporary, some seem fictional and a few of them are written in modern demotic Greeklish. Oikeioi should have been Vestiaritae, for example - in fact the Byzantine word for household was Βεστιάριον not Οικεία. Megaloallagitai should have been Magaloalogitae: riders of large horses. Of the four troops of a cavalry battalion, one was τhe magaloalogitae, the other three being the μονοκάβαλλοι, δικάβαλλοι and τρικάβαλλοι, probably meaning the ones riding large horses and those having one mount, a second mount or a third mount, possibly smaller sized. There are lots of the wrongly spelled "allagitai" among the cavalry units, but none of the other 3 types. This is not an issue just with this mod. There is often enthusiasm in producing Byzantine factions in Total War games by modders and coming up with fancy names for units while rarely consulting Byzantine texts or having much familiarity with Byzantine Greek. In which case, why not stick with the English terms, such as Household Cavalry or Bodyguard. Why invent difficult to pronounce words that have not even existed?
