The most up-to-date release is Old School Remix 1.2 (07.08.2023).

- MP5 is now actually suppressed, M79 has a safety range, Jackhammer has a higher rate of fire and headshots in general do a bit more damage
- Innocents dying (aka killed by Max) can result in a game over

HOW TO PLAY
1. The Unofficial Weapon Patch for Max Payne 2 must have been installed (the installer & instructions included in the package).
2. Insert the MaxPayne2_OldSchoolRemix_1.2.mp2m mod file to your Max Payne 2 directory and "Previously-mp1.bik" to "movies" folder in the same directory,
3. Select MaxPayne2_OldSchoolRemix_1.2 on the Choose customized game dropbox in the game's launcher and press "Play".
HOW TO PLAY IN THE FIRST PERSON MODE
Copy the "data" folder in the "osr_1.2_first_person" folder to the same directory where your .mp2m file is, then launch the mod as you normally would with MaxPayne2_OldSchoolRemix_1.2 selected on the Choose customized game dropbox. You shouldn't need to change anything else, even tho some of the crosshairs in game might work better than others in this mode.
This mode isn't compatible with any other version/mod or the original game, or saved games without First Person mode.
To disable First Person mode, rename or remove the "data" folder. Something like "data1" or "data_" will be enough.
TIPS & TECHNICAL INFO
- This mod doesn't support save game files made with other versions/mods or the original game.
- If you use number keys to select weapons, you will need to remap the keys (1-6) whenever you play this mod or go back to normal game / other mods. Do this in the game's Options -> Controls -> Combat screen, or simply "Reset to Defaults". Mouse Wheel is not affected by the weapon slot changes.
- Back to Aesir levels may need "High" graphic settings to run.
- New Particle Effects have a potential to challenge the most low-end computers.
- To gain more advantage in firefights: Turn off "Bullet Time Assist" in "Options -> Game" and continue using BT while and after landing the shootdodge to land even more shots before enemies do.
- You can face someone wielding an M79 Grenade Launcher up to ~10 times during a Story playthru. Max will also have one in DMW or you can type GetM79 (or Coder / GetAllWeapons) in console to acquire it anytime. You will also have a Lead Pipe and a Baseball Bat available most of the time.
- Bonus Weapons available for some DMW characters can be acquired in any level by console codes, but are not collected in normal MP2 Story missions. Type GetSawedShotgunDual or GetMP5Dual in console, or have every weapon available by "GetAllWeapons" or "Coder" commands.
MOD HISTORY
The first full version of the Old School Mod for Max Payne 2 was released in July 2019 by a Team lead by GP Channel and continued from where mods like Valkyr Rage and Max Payne Classic left. It was the first mod to create a nostalgic audiovisual atmosphere where Max Payne 2's story plays with the actors and arsenal from first game.
Old School Remix (first release November 8th 2019) took these ideas a step further and focused even more on the environmental effects while adding some more weapons and level remakes. A Level Pack (v1.01) with two more levels was later released.

I forgot to mention that you should have "Fogging" enabled in the setup in case someone has it turned off, because it's one of the new environmental effects. Most outdoor sections have freeze fog in them.
Edit: This is probably a non-issue in 2023, but I just realized the mod will crash when loading levels if you attempt to play with "Low" or "Medium" setup settings. The recommended settings (aka the ones I always use) are the ones you get when you click "High" in the "Reset All Settings To:" box.

Hi if you want to help, try importing the Max Payne 3 Sam Lake model (the one published in 2023) into Max Payne 2 engine (so it can be used with this mod later). Other than that there are no active plans (or group) in this project at the moment.

Just a curious artistic question. Is there any way to add the original music back like in the hospital intro level etc. I love this mod just want the original music back or better yet an option to turn one or the other on. Seems impossible to implement though. Great work on it all!
I also use the controller app Xpadder for haptic feedback on the weapons and reloading using a Dualshock 4. I get a close approximation with this setup for the shooting at least. The PS2 versions are the only ones that featured vibration feedback but it was mostly you could feel getting shot and no recoil when you were shooting. The xbox inferior versions do not have vibration.
Incidentally, in those days I played this on a Windows xp machine and I had a Logitech IFeel Mouse and there was a Max Payne file you could download and install. I felt every bullet fired, felt getting shot, explosions and environmental effects and Payne to the MaX! I will never forget the feeling of the intensity of that game cranked to 11. I released my finger from Mouse Button 1. and it was over. I still keep a Windows XP machine around to try it out and see if it was as good as I remember.
In this case it was easy to change the music files back to Max Payne 2 ones. Changed the main menu and game over theme back too and muted the graphic novel MP1 music. Here's a download link, it works the same way as the FPS mode "data" folder:

Although I'm really confused on how to install it lol. Do I just put this data folder in with the other one that's the fps folder or somewhere else in the installation. I'm terrible with mods and am really out of practice.

Does that data folder go in that directory (currently there is no data folder) or the one with the first person mode (which contains a data folder)
With Max Payne 3 I think I will give up on the Sam Lake mod :(. I have NO idea what time space continuum that program operates in lol. My goal is to play all of them with SAM the Man. I literally need a youtube video for proper installation of the max payne 3 Sam Lake mod for that. ugh
Hi again. You need to put the "data" folder in your case to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Max Payne 2 The Fall of Max Payne" folder, the same one where the Max Payne 2 exe and the mod mp2m file are. The FPS mode and MP2 music folders are different ones. To disable the changes rename or remove the "data" folder.
It functions in a way that the "data" folder overrides the stuff that the mod has when you launch the game so you don't have to make a big mod file for every small thing.
Can't say anything about the MP3 mods because I have only played the game on consoles.
