Post tutorial Report RSS LOD creation in Max, part two

First we used the modifier Noise of 3D Studio Max for creating a "realistic" propmodel of a fence. Now we'll use another trick.

Posted by on - Basic Props Modelling

For this trick we need a higher poly model or models. We're going to use this trees made by IrishLostBoy (archangelstudio@gmail.com).

Each one have near 1350 polys. It's a good polycount for a detailed tree, but we need at least two LODs model to get our game running well. First at all, we must decide if we need all our models together in a group o if we need separated ones. If we need them grouped, then we should select all of them, but if we need them separately, we should repeat the process for each tree. This tutorial asumes it doesn't matter to get the a group of trees.

Select the three trees and copy them twice(not Instancing). When you get three copies change their names to something like Tree_01_LOD_1, Tree_01_LOD_2, Tree_02_LOD_1,... Now, select the group you are trying to get low poly version with. At the modifiers list select MultiRes.

First at all click on the Generate button. Now, your last step is to change the Vert Percent. parameter. Now you can choose the numbre of polys you want to each LOD version of your model.

In this screen, the nearest group of trees got 4000 polys, the medium group got 2340 and the farther group got 1180 polys.

This way, you can have LOD version quickly obtained. This tutorial, like the first one, is oriented to new people looking for a way to make LODs model as faster as possible.
