Lambda Wars (formerly Half-Life 2: Wars) brings the struggle between the human resistance and their Combine overlords to a multiplayer real-time strategy setting. The Lambda Wars beta only requires Alien Swarm installed to play. It features 3 multiplayer game modes: Sandbox, Annihilation and Overrun, showcasing the Rebels and Combine playable factions and a full-fledged RTS interface and HUD. There is also a singleplayer tutorial and a handful of singleplayer missions.

At first the mod crashed on me several times before being able to start a match. I ended up having to reinstall HL2, HL2:EP1, HL2:EP2, and the source SDK to get it to properly work. Once I got into a match, I was highly disappinted. I was welcomed to a laggy RTS game that had only about 5 units. These 5 units all looked extremely similar and there was no real difference between the ways they attacked except some were ranged and some simply charged at eachother. The base is made up of only 1 building and only 1 race is currently playable in the mod. The graphics settings, even on the lowest, run like crap on a 460 GTX.

Now don't get me wrong here, it's definitely an ambitious mod that has potential. But as someone that has kept an eye on the mod since version 0.1, I'm extremely sad that there hasn't been much improvement at all. The combat looks confusing, the graphics are unoptimized, the maps are bare and undetailed, the units lack variety, pathfinding is hell, and everything feels so stuck in the past. If this was the original 0.1 version, I would never have had my hopes up, but this is 1.0 BETA. It seems like not much has been done in the time period of 2 years and it might be better off if the mod developers put there talent somewhere else.
