Are you sure about that? The Spartans are most famous for using their huge shields for offense and defense equally as much as each other. And that is only one example, many people used them as weapons as well as for extra protection.

Those would be the shield that Roman Legionnaires used, I'm guessing is what you're talking about. They're called a scutum by the way.

also where are the Alexander style Bronze and Silver shields? the Ptolomey pharaohs still used them after his death.
