Having never watched Star Trek, or Star Gate or whatever this is from, I don't get why people would argue over the name.

That's because you've never watched Stargate. You don't know who O'Neill is.(O'Neill, with TWO Ls!)
BTW, the ship 'is' called the O'Neill class.
