System requirements: Low preset @ 720P: GTX 285 : Low preset @ 900P: GTX 750 Ti : High preset @ 1080P: GTX 1660 Ti : Medium preset @ 4k: RTX 3080 12GB : I have upgraded another modders work yet again, but this time it was reasonably close to the limit of what the engine can do enough that I will instead of uploading a total rework, I will offer a patch with the same philosophy as usual of maximizing fidelity. He also using programming made modding the games textures possible so thats of value. All character models, guns, and some cherry picked textures out in the world are now DXT5 after using AI to reconstruct detail lost in his otherwise total DXT1 pass for every texture in the game which will allow the textures to retain more detail. DXT5 is a more modern superior compression technique compared to DXT1. Guns, main character model, and some faces + 2x rez.

The original modders texture quality really impressed me and ultimately made this the first game I didnt have to by hand clean anything up. System requirements...

Will this work with the updated version of FEAR HD textures, which is v2.0.2? HD textures v1.1 is a disaster and crashes every time I have to load a new interval unless texture resolution is set to minimum. This still happened with your mod installed. I have an RTX 4090 so it's not because my system is too weak.

EDIT: Turns out 2.0.2 is also a disaster. With both versions the game either crashes when loading an interval or there are horrible missing texture problems. Not looking like there's any way to make HD textures playable, with or without your improvements.

Im just now getting back into the refinement process of my projects again after almost a year of taking a break. Ill have to look into that soon. Mind you this game is inherently iffy with modern operating systems and I cant speak for windows 11. You might want to consult my Master Patch information as it has known problem workaround notes there. I too have a RTX 4090 and will no longer be making new content I havent already committed to in the retro world, having done my part. The future is RTX Remix, which might be 3 months away. (Update: Its publicly available at the time of editing this)

My assumption is yes, it will, unless he deliberately made changes to spite me for caring about using the rest of this games budget. Which is certainly possible. We are a competitive species to a fault, so you can expect degenerate behavior like this regularly without really good reason. Im loyal to outcome, not my personal greatness. But im an Alien in this respect.

Thanks for your reply. Just to be clear, these problems are present in the original mods by Rivarez and have been reported by lots of people in the comments pages on his mods--for example, LukasThyWalls and bodo635 here:

Moddb.com

A guy on the GOG forums also commented on the problems created by the Rivarez mod:

"the problem with the HD textures is they make the game and its expansions completely unstable and 99% of the time break the game and expansions"

Gog.com

So the missing textures, crashes, etc. aren't caused by your mod, but by his mod (the problems are present in both the 1.1 and 2.0 versions of his mod, so his updates didn't fix the problems and some say they made the problems worse). I'm using Windows 10 btw, not 11, but it wouldn't surprise me if Windows 10 creates some problems with FEAR anyway.

Rivarez did a pretty good job on this one. I cant say the same for DOOM 3. However his programming meets modern OS meets this games janky nature, yeah, im not shocked. I dont 100% test to the very end of a game. Ill get maybe 60-70% of the way in at best. Ive noticed consistent problems with this game depending on OS build, if you restart the PC it can fix a lot of them. And I found the workaround to the mouse cursor glitch. Force rez in DG Voodoo and keep game rez at what the OG game launched with. Maybe in the future ill hunt down what you are talking about. I get the very strong impression my work is too over the top, and personality, for this website, so im moving over to Nexus. Maybe they will let me update my work. Maybe they wont. Either way im uploading elsewhere. Tired of uploading files failing. Servers are just not stable.

Working on Jedi Academy right now. Polishing all my work with new tool.

My guess is its caused by a memory leak. The crashes.

"So the missing textures"

If missing as in you can see through the geometry im familiar with that. If you run the game, leave, then play it again on some windows 10 builds it will happen 100% of the time. Especially the first levels windows outside with the buildings before you get knocked out. I think its caused by the game more than Rivarez in that case. But his extra code isnt helping matters because the games memory management has no idea it exists, and its already almost certainly not perfect. Now we modders come along and its asking for it to crash. In a way, we know the game better that way.

There are games that I once supported in my library but threw out for being fluke unicorn OS build stuff. The worst was Metal Gear Solid 2. To get raytracing working you needed the right reshade version, graphics driver, windows 10 build. It was pure luck I got it working. Never again, too unreliable to support, id be wasting peoples time. Like when I upload files that fail. Thats why I tested all my work on at least 2 builds just to make sure. Some more than that. FEAR appeared to pass the sniff test. Small procedures could prevent **** ups, but then there are games the DRM is just simply, no, you have the wrong build.

Im very extreme with how I work. All or nothing personality. When I see objectively lazy work, and people are promoting it everywhere and the ratings are what they are, it doesnt really trigger me. It invites me to point out its flaws.

The flaws in my work is I havent had time to polish it with Gigapixel Sharpen AI through and through. Color correction to get rid of those reshade passes will simply take too much time im afraid. Already brute forced 120 game support over 4 years of no life literally like 120 hours or some crazy **** a week. Have to get a life ya kno.

Before I throw Rivarez completely under the bus I think the game is inherently unstable because its programming, and pushing it hard invites the memory leak to screw up things. But same dude maybe to this point in time still has a 512x512 stock shotgun texture with totally busted normals using his mod for DOOM 3. I used it because its the largest one I could find. Mines at engines walls as is my religion. The engine has to be pushed to the absolute limit as the games old and needs all the help it can get. And Doom 3 has a trillion texture up rez mods. Ive yet to find my standard of a competent one, and since ive created one that is, ive invited people to downscale my work into the budget of lower end GPUs. So far they have been too proud. 4GBs of texture upgrades in 2023? No thanks. I have a 24GB GPU. Its an old muscle car. Max it out or GTFO. RTX Remix probably isnt going to work in natively OpenGL titles so real time raytracing, not baked into the texture versions. Wrappers always made the x86 version fail. Now there is work on RTX for X64 version; ill believe it when I see it. Many projects never finalize. Hence why I go so hard on what I consider achievable goals.

New tool can address all the common problems I mostly would deal with by hand which was a super hassle. Sharpen is probably not the best name. It evens out oversharpening while redrawing the grid pattern of detail textures into a interpolation of that at a smaller grid scale down to the actual pixels on the screen. Its very sophisticated. With skin on characters id get grainy bs if passing it through upscale AI back in fourth to attempt to do the same thing, grow detail textures. Thats what this tool does and its more competent. It can literally clean up grain in the face or skin texture while noising up everywhere else. Should have been called Gigapixel detail texture generator.

Gigapixel definitely wanted you to buy both upscale and sharpen and use them together. It appears to have flaws built in for this purpose. Ive found them the way I use their products.

Thanks. Do you think it's possible using dgVoodoo with the Rivarez mod and your mod will reduce the missing textures and crashing problems?

Heads up. DG Voodoo supports emulation of TruForm, though ive never actually got it working when I tried one game it comes out of the box with even playing with the config.

www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=83000

A geometry bump in these games in the official human guided/sculpted versions would be worth the hassle.

Havent messed with this game, and the patches for these are very esoteric, available really around the time the internet was just born for the publics consumption. Meaning finding them may not be practical.

In other news, I have a new mod coming thats sure to blow your mind. The texture file is stable at 80GBs for Jedi Academy. Already getting creative with the forced texture format compression to get more value out of the memory being used without pulling apart the color resolution in textures that actually matters by being selective. Game looks like a modern game almost if it wasnt for the low geometry counts and therefore the faces can stand out as coming from 2003.

Dege the programmer for DG Voodoo is probably the biggest Legend out there no one really talks because they dont know about it. His software is the most practical thing ive ever come across for retro modding and enhancement. Man deserves a Nobel Prize for being such a ultra chad.

Yeah Dege is awesome.

Can you tell me your specific settings for running FEAR in dgVoodoo with your texture mod? Like what video card do you pick from the drop down in the DirectX tab etc.?

5700 Ultra emulation.

Use the older version I supply in my patch, the newer one was giving me issues.

Everything else is preference. The above actually matters.

Absolutely. Its why in my Master Patch I recommend it. Also have a informational file with my findings while building mod in the hidden format, so you need to show hidden files in windows to see it. I hid it to make it less stuff to overwhelm people in some games cases where its just a lot of information. DX9 even if you play with A B C versions with -dxlevel 9x commands wasnt that great. DG Voodoos the way I play it. Less iffy, less bugs. I even measured the performance of DX9 A B C DG Voodoo Vulkan and an OpenGL wrapper. The latter being essentially worthless on all DX9 games in my library so I listed the fastest renderer per game. In some cases I provide a DX10 GPU fastest driver. Its incredibly detailed high caliber work that took me 3 years to produce. Glad thats over.

One game the performance improvement was literally over 60% using DG Voodoo. DX9 path of all flavors was a dumpster fire. Less extreme examples exist. Found rare cases multi GPU with third party software worked with unlisted game for DX9. If its DX9 tweaking ive probably done it.
