I started playing Empires about one and a half year ago. I was trying out all the mods which where around like Insurgency, dystopia and some more. What attracted me most about empires were the (at that time) promised features: aircraft and the ability to change the map with tunnels and trenches for sure. At first, I was a little disappointed because there was neither aircraft nor a possibility to dig trenches or tunnels. Also the vehicle behavior is clumsy. (was playing UT2k4 before)

What kept me playing was what was not listed in the features: squadbased combat, diversity of Infantry combat tactics, the thrill to fight in a battle where the circumstances change from one moment to the next.
In one moment you and your squad are roughly holding off the enemy from behind your walls, in the next you rush over the battlefield, trying to catch up with your teams tanks which turned the area into a deathzone for the enemys. Just another few moments later you see your tanks blown into pieces, facing the enemy tanks, desperately try to place walls to hold your lines....
