A 17 maps episode for Duke Nukem 3D by the Duke4 community.
Requires (free) EDuke32 sourceport to run.
Check dukehard.txt for Installation instructions, play information, FAQ and credits.
Installation / How to play :
1) Download and install the LATEST version of (free sourceport) EDuke32*.
2) Extract the content of the Duke Hard 7z into your EDuke32 folder.
This will create a new folder called "dukehard" in your EDuke32 folder.
3) Copy-paste the file "DUKE3D.GRP"** of your copy of Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition into the root folder of EDuke32 (NOT in the "dukehard" folder).
If you have the Steam or GOG version of Duke Nukem 3D installed on your computer, you don't need to do this. EDuke32 will automatically use the .grp file from those versions.
4) Launch EDuke32, and in the STARTUP WINDOW*** of EDuke32, under "CUSTOM GAME CONTENT DIRECTORY", choose "dukehard".
In that same startup window, make sure "Polymer" is unticked.
Press start and enjoy!
* You can download EDuke32 at Eduke32.com or at Dukeworld.duk...ke32
Make sure you use the latest version.
**The file "DUKE3D.grp" is what contains of all the data of Duke Nukem 3D, it pretty much IS the game which is why it is required. That file is also required to play the original game (or any other map, episode, mod, etc) in any sourceport.
*** If the startup window doesn't show up when launching EDuke32, you'll have to re-enable it : in game -> options -> game setup -> "Show window at start: YES" (first line under game setup)
If an issue shows up, try reinstalling everything in a new clean folder to avoid conflicts with another mod/map you may have already installed in your EDuke32 folder; while making sure to use the LATEST version of EDuke32. If that doesn't work, post the content of your log file and we'll help you.

Important play information (MUST READ!)
- This episode is intended as a VANILLA-like experience (as vanilla as EDuke32 can be), which means :
* This episode is NOT compatible with the High-Resolution Pack. If you play with the HRP, you can expect half of the visuals rendering in a glitchy way.
* This episode is NOT compatible with gameplay mods. Play this episode with classic DN3D gameplay.
* This episode is NOT compatible with Polymer. Make sure Polymer is turned off :
(Make sure it is unticked at the top-right of the startup windows of EDuke32; or in the in-game options, choose a video mode that is NOT Polymer.)
(this is starting to sound like "NO FUN ALLOWED" but trust me, there is plenty of fun to be had if you like classic Duke3D)
- You will lose all your weapons and items at the start of each map. This decision was taken to ensure proper balance throughout the entire episode, as every map was built individually.
Indeed, with a such long episode (17maps), the player would most likely end up with way too many weapons, ammo and items after just a few maps, if we didn't use this system.
What does this mean for the player?
* Don't worry! We've provided enough weapons, ammo and health packs in each map ! (As long as you pay attention, look around for supplies, and don't rush like a madman)
* You should use all the weapons at your disposal within each map, rather than 'saving it in case you need it more in later maps'
* If you die and your last save is in a previous map, do not load that save. Press "N" and you'll start the current map over. You'll lose less progress.
- The episode supports two difficulty settings : Let's Rock (skill#2: Normal) and Come Get Some (skill#3: Hard); which are the 2 difficulty settings 99% of players still use.
A few maps (though not many) have also taken into account Piece Of Cake (skill#1) and Damn I'm Good (skill#4).
Only experienced Dukers should try Come Get Some on a first playthrough. Use Let's Rock otherwise.
Damn I'm Good isn't recommended on a first playthrough, try it at your own risk!
- To unlock the Randomizer mode (which let's you replay the episode with a different randomized map order each time you start it) and the Map Select screen ("Usermap"), you need to beat the episode on Come Get Some without cheating.
- This episode will NOT run in anything other than EDuke32 (DOS Duke, Jonof, xDuke, Rancidmeat, Megaton, etc) . Most levels can NOT work if played individually in anything other than EDuke32, either.

Updated download to v1.2 :
- Some con changes to match EDuke32's evolution as well as several map fixes.
Check readme file for full changelog.
This is GREAT!
Tried to play the mod using the latest eduke32 beta (4525 64 bit),Polymere is disabled and so is using autoload (happens with autoload enabled or disabled anyway) and the episode doesn't load even though in the EDuke32 set up I have Dukehard selected as the mod to load.Just regular Duke 3D atomic edition starts up with it's 4 episodes and user maps.
To BoneofFear: that's weird; did you try reinstalling in a new clean folder? The issue might be coming from a conflict with another map or mod already installed in your eduke32 folder; try that first and if that doesn't work you can also try this :
- copy paste duke3D.def from the dukehard folder to the root eduke32 folder
- open dukehard.dat (using something like winrar) and extract everything in the root eduke32 folder (same as where you copy pasted duke3D.def)
- Try and launch eduke32 (with "custom game content directory" set to "none")
Make sure you try this in a clean eduke32 folder so it may not cause conflicts with already existing maps or mods.
This is sort of a workaround but I'll ask more competent people (than me) about your issue.
Got it to work now that I put it in it's own folder ( C:\DukeHard ) Awesome so far.Whoever made that Poorman's Library map did an awesome job making my jaw drop with it's mind fuckary.
If that doesn't work please provide the content of your log file after trying to run it unsuccessfully.
I'm thinking reinstalling everything in a new clean folder should work though as this is probably a conflict with already existing mods in your eduke32 folder.
Not able to load it: if I put this mod under a directory, it won't load (says duke3d.grp not found). If I copy its contents to the root directory it will delete my duke3d.grp! Tried to use -g -x -j to load the dat file, as I also tried to uncompress it (in all the cases, it complains of errors in EDUKE.CON and that it won't find duke3d.grp, even if it is in the root directory )
I am not using any mods, not even opengl. There isn't any instructions on the parameters to use?
Sorry, I missed the log part. There it is:

Yes
Duke Nukem 3D game data was not found. A valid copy of "DUKE3D.GRP" or other compatible data is needed to run EDuke32.
You can find "DUKE3D.GRP" in the "DN3DINST" or "ATOMINST" directory on your Duke Nukem 3D installation CD-ROM.
EDuke32 will now close.
(The yes near the end occurs after asking me it I shall load the internal defaults because of the GAME.CON errors. selecting no will exit with no more output to the log file)
You're not using latest eduke32 (says r4481 at the top of the log)
The episode requires latest eduke32 (r4525), like stated in the installation information
download and install latest eduke32 and try again; you can download it here : www.eduke32.com or here Dukeworld.duke4.net
I didn't even notice the new eduke version!
But yes, now it works. Thank you very much!
NP, have fun!
Thank you, guys! Great mod. Amazing old-style maps with new effects. I am old Duke fan, it's best present for me. I hope this is not the end... Tell me this is not the end?
P.S. Mod is great looking with HRP and Polymer, why you disable them? It,s easy to enable HRP and Polymer, but most users dont know this.
Sorry for my bad english, I am from Beloussia.
The map were built with the original game's sprites, textures and shading system in mind.
Which means that if you play with the HRP, you'll have tons of issues : most of the models will not face the right direction; sometimes sprites were used in unconventional ways which means that you'll be seeing models appear in a glitchy way that is not intended; textures will not look they are supposed to at all;etc
And for Polymer, NO Polymer light source was used by the mappers; and t here will be plenty of moments Polymer light will appear even though it's not supposed to (not intended by the mappers) like for example each time there is a switch; and it's also most likely going to give you framerate issues. So in other words HRP&Polymer will only give you un-intended "glitch looking" behaviours without giving you the good sides.
Polymer+HRP can be really good when the maps are BUILT with it in mind, like for example the mod Duke Nukem Eternity; however using it with maps/mods not built with it will only give you glitchy behaviours without giving you the real advantages of Polymer&HRP.
Duke Hard is realy HARD!!!
Yes, when HRP is enabled, Duke Hard may a tons of issues with 3d models/textures, but maphacks can solve the problem. I walk this mod with HRP, it's very cool, textures with bumpmaps make mod beautiful. For me mod looking better with HRP, but for others, as someone like.
Thank's again.

can't find the secret on level 8

Think small.
Oh my god. I've been trying to use this mod all day long and finally did it! I'm using EDuke32 on a Mac and enabling mods on it is a pain in the neck. I have applied the workaround you posted a couple of comments back and it works like a charm now. This mod is truly great. Reminds me of the huge expansion packs for PC games back in the day. Thank you so much for making this available. Definitely one of the all-time best DN3D mods out there.
Hey. I have the Mac version of EDuke32 also. Latest I could find, but he mod refuses to load. How do I get it to come up? And when the config window appears there is no option to choose the custom game content directory, so EDuke loads the default game instead.
