Puzzle based modification for Source engine. Two world dimensions + two timelines, simple but unusual gameplay mechanics.

Post news Report RSS Introducing Dual Reality.

When one reality isn't enough. A new puzzle game for people like you and me.

Posted by on

Parallel universes are a recurrent theme for literature and movies, games however aren't that familiar with such concept. You may have seen it used as a narrative resource mainly, not as the core gameplay concept. That's what Dual Reality is about, the constant interaction between two world dimensions and player.

The idea came to me around two years ago, the production begun one year later as a side project because I still was busy with Fistful of Frags. The pace increased progressively, focus always has been the technology behind it and its application into core game mechanics. That means Source engine has been transformed into a "dual reality engine", so it's capable of simulate two separate world dimensions. Each dimension runs its own time, so dual time and dual space are the main features in this game world.

There will be unveiled many details during the upcoming weeks, yet you won't see any of the real levels until the very end probably. Spoiling the puzzles wouldn't be a good idea, so I'll create some simple scenes to showcase interesting stuff. You may find elements which won't appear in the game.

Finally, here's the first video. Perhaps you won't find it very appealing, I actually didn't want to tease you but showing the differences between a "single reality" game and a dual one. So this is a single reality view, nothing to do with the real gameplay, yet interesting to fully understand the concept later.

Thanks for your confidence :) It's not supposed to be any clear so this is a 2 part teaser, let's say. This is also a puzzle mod, so I guess thinking should be promoted from the beginning heheh.

Interesting! Should we expect to see teasers on a regular basis, or will it take time?

There will be regular updates for sure, following this one. There's quite a few features I want to expose, and I want to do it well so the information will come in small steps. I'll be asking for some help with testing and other things, btw.

Well since you plan to promote your puzzle mod by making us "think" I hope you can make the regular teasers/updates interesting enough to keep us puzzling with them. The first one looks very cool and intriguing already!
You've got my attention! ^^

Good luck with the project!

I definitively want to go into that direction. Well, my first objective is to highlight the new possibilities this game offers, but I'm sure there will be chances to follow this trend.

Hey R_Yell, nice to see a page & things going on !
Sorry I didn't had any time to send you demos of my tests (since I spend my ingame time in quicksave/loads, I am not sure they could be useful to anything actually..)
I see you added 'ghosts' for props/npcs, good idea, would help to get lost a bit less I guess :)
And Hooray for the jelly ;)
