A preview of the first custom "movie" in development for Left 4 Dead

Posted by stenchy on Nov 27th, 2008

Sourced from L4Dmods.com:

I just had a very interesting interview with Darth_Brush, the creator of the map, Crossroads Mall.

Anyone who has been active in the Left 4 Dead community knows about this map. This map was started in November 2005. Originally it was made for the Half-Life 2 mod, No More Room in Hell. It's been in development for 5 years and it certainly will be a great mod when it is eventually released.

As my converstation with Darth_Brush continued, he told me a lot about the map itself and what his plans are for it. He has shown me some screenshots of the map and it has grown so much since he posted the video on YouTube.

L4DMods.com got an exclusive preview of exactly how much this map has grown over the last 2 years. Lighting has been added, shops in the mall have been filled with props, some spectacular custom textures have also been added to this wonderful map.

L4DMods.com will serve as the primary and exclusive location for all updates concering this particular map. We have given our full support to have this map ported to Left 4 Dead. Darth_Brush has agreed to have us advertise in the map and a special little surprise will be coming to the L4DMods.com Community real soon!

Furthermore, our community will have the chance to help with scripts and prop modelling.
If you have any skills you think will be useful to the development of this map, please let us know.

If you want to be updated about the development of this map, you'd better watch this space.
We will be hosting an HD video of the updated version soon. We are very excited about this map and cannot wait to see it on our servers real soon!

This work of art will be a full blown campaign. How many chapters is still being discussed... Maybe 5?

Here are some screenshots of the map. Click on them to view the full size image.

What are you talking about? There are no AI Nodes in Left 4 Dead. The zombies spawn procedurally. The only thing you have to do for the AI is add invisible solids on objects so they can use them as a climbing point.

Also, I have been following this map for awhile. Really impressive. Perhaps you might even take this further and branch this out into separate levels, or make more levels that go past the mall.

it is called "part 1 enter the mall" so I suspect it will be chaptered. Amazing to see teams converting to L4D so quickly. I guess that is the benefit of having the AI already done - only need to map really.

No no.
They need AI nodes to know where to spawn and where to run\jump.

they use nav meshes, and its all fairly automatic

Its not automatic.
Probably you could generate them via CS or something(L4D ingame nav_generate wont work) but they won't be as good as specialised nav meshes.
Because zombies jump further, crouch lower and just much more agile than average BOT. They can climb in windows and so on.
