Description

On this day, 27 years ago, a tragic catastrophe occurred on the outskirts of the soviet-Ukrainian city, Pripyat. At the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant there was an explosion in reactor 4, due to failure of a release valve to relieve the cooling system of the reactor. The incident spread radiation to the surrounding area almost immediately making the entire Chernobyl district in-hospitable for humans. As an Engineering student, the Chernobyl incident really highlights how important it is for dangerous processes to be carefully monitored at all times. Failure to correct an error comes to the cost of the everyday men and women.

Widely considered to be the worst nuclear power plant disaster in human in history, the battle to contain the catastrophe involved half a million workers, who together took part in what would be one the largest civil-engineering tasks ever undertaken in human history. If not for the construction of the sarcophagus, the Chernobyl incident could have had global effects.

We at 828 want to commemorate the heroes who sacrificed their blood, sweat, tears and good health in order secure the contemporary and upcoming generations of people in the whole of Europe, and not least the people who made the biggest sacrifice possible - those who sacrificed their life, so that others could live.
