Classic Offensive is a CS:GO mod with the goal of bringing back the community aspects and aesthetics of CS

Report RSS Taking an other direction after the release?

Since the mod is pretty much limited by CS:GO's code, I've got two options which will drastically change the mod.

Posted by on

It feels like 1.6 but will NEVER be like 1.6

That's a fact, and I'm not hiding it or selling dreams to you guys, the mod will NEVER be EXACTLY like 1.6 and even if at first I wanted to bring back ALL aspects of 1.6, I'm starting to change my mind on that because of the limitations, the fact that people would get bored since it'll just be a remastered 1.6, and of course all the problems 1.6 had related to balancing issues, bugs, etc...

dust

So, what's the deal?

Thing is, why not taking the mod into a smart direction? Where there would be no balancing problems? Reworked maps, keeping the improvements CS:GO had over the years, and all that while keeping the nostalgia and feeling from 1.6? This may sound crazy... but think about it, the perfectly balanced Counter-Strike where the P228 and FiveSeven wouldn't be as useless as they were in the past, the shotguns having a purpose, the sub-machineguns being useful.

The mod is for now taking both directions at the same time... keeping the balance from 1.6, while removing the bugs that were in 1.6 which were fixed in CS:GO, but still by keeping the exact same maps as they were in 1.6 but at the same time keeping the improvements CS:GO introduced...

csgo p250

What do we do then?

I have basically two options:

  • Option 1 - The Straight Classic

Build the mod without improving what 1.6 did in the past, including porting the EXACT same maps but in HD (a bit like what CSPromod did in the past... though it's the path I've been taking until now... Dust2 and Inferno are examples about how it'd go), keeping CS1.6's balance, extending reload times, keeping the glitches from 1.6. But I would be limited about things I can't modify like, nade physics, players heights and all those things hardcoded in CS:GO.

Important points:

- Keep the 1.6 balance.

- Keep the EXACT same maps.

- Keep the SAME feeling.

- Do basically a CSPromod 2.

- Anything to make it like 1.6,

- But only keeping CS:GO's stuff if I can't get around it.

- Stick to the old gamemodes and not improving them at all.

- Keep the old particle effects.

  • Option 2 - The Perfect Mix

Build the mod around what CS:GO improved, while keeping the nostalgia and fixing the balance WITHOUT the new weapons, playermodels, sounds, skins... but remaking the maps around the ambiance and art styles of 1.6 instead of a straight port (basically 90s themed, influenced by films and Half-Life... take CS_Italy for example which is included in the mod and is in fact CS:GO's Italy with the feeling and layout from 1.6)

Important points:

- Try to fix the balance of the weapons like Valve is trying to do.

- Rework CS:GO's maps, while making them feel like the old ones and keep the themes of 1.6.

- Embrace the greatest CS:GO's changes (opaque smokes, right click throwing, C4 sounds, map improvements, skins),

- But keep the Classic feel (and the rest that made 1.6 popular).

- Not re-implementing the new weapons (f**n' kek-9)

- Keep the good old sounds (and MAYBE rework them a bit).

- Keep in mind that CS1.6 had its issues, and that CS:GO fixed some of them.

- Support the mod until my death Keep improving the balance of the mod using community feedback

- Add new gamemodes (Instagib, Golden gun, CS:GO's Guardian gamemode)

- Add new HD particle effects because they look outdated in the current version.

- Keep the old 1.6 movement physics though improving it to make it smooth.

Now what?

Now? you guys Vote!

Because the mod is all about the community, I will never take decisions without knowing what the community want, a part of it is nostalgic but want great changes, and the rest is pure 1.6 players. The mod is still planed on the 25th December no matter what.

Votes are over, Option 2 was picked at 76%

Man,I guess that the best option is to go with a 2 way
There is no need to remake a 1.6,cuz it will never be like it
BUT:
If we can mix classic vibe of 1.6 and put it together with improvements from GO,then we will have a perfect CS with good Ol'memories and fresh thingies.
So,I vote for the second option

I'd say the second option would be best.

It didn't work due to problems with the head of the project, nothing to do with the overall vision/goal.

The second path. Stagnation is not a very good option.

The P228 was far from useless. Think USP on steroids or poor man's deagle, it had its advantages either way. And the FiveSeveN was there for the great accuracy and the bragging rights. 2 types of crazies in all of 1.6: noscope Scouters and trip-stepping 57'ers. Wanna talk useless try the TMP or the Galil.

That being said, I think option #2 is your best bet. No sense in trying to redo 1.6 since you can't do it 100% anyway, for the reasons you listed. And besides, ye olde 1.6/CZ have plenty of graphics and audio mods that manage to keep them up to date.

I just created an account to give you the thumbs up on this project. Great work so far, and I hope you can go all the way with this!
If done right, we might get something that brings the old 1.6 players and new players together. That's what Im hoping for since I never could adapt to cs:go like many.

To achieve this there's no debate between the 2 options, it has to be the second choice.

But if you're going to remake nuke, make sure its the old csgo nuke, not the ****** one valve made. That would honestly make me so happy.

Option 1 is def better for competetive play and option 2 is better for casuals. I would go with option 1 and go full CSP2 but the best option would be ask pro players and ppl who are involved in esports (like you did with Zinnoc). For me its option 1 all the way (casuals wont agree but whatever). I have high hopes in this mod #letsmakecsgreatagain :D

Thing is, Option 1 is the way 1.6 was, Option 2 is the way the community would like CS if there should have been some improvements to it.

It's obvious that the best way would be perfect balance beetwen all version of cs, but when it would be directed by ppl from r/globaloffensive that play this game for 2-3 years I highly doubt that anything good will be created.

Personally I like the way that this mod is going right now - only things I would change are particles, add quickscopes, better wallbangs and try doing something with nade physics. So if this mod will be well directed it can be even better than 1.6 .

It's... it's like you read nothing of the above statement... He can't add a lot of the things you mentioned because he doesn't have access to the code. This a mod of a game that doesn't have an SDK for this type of modification. CSPro worked because it was it's own game technically. It was made, I think, use the HL2 SDK and thus many of the mechanics were remade from scratch. The problem is this was a lot of work and for what seemed like little pay off. What this should be is a continuation of 1.6, 1.7 if you will.

The most important thing for me is the 1.6 movement. Please try to clone that as closely as possible. The crouch running & bhopping was perfect.

Second option. Also, I think you should use some CSS maps but changed with some 1.6/GO stuff because Source's maps are much like 1.6's map but remade but not changed as much as GO. You can add some little 1.6/GO improvements.

It's a nice idea with CO, man! As I see it, it's like the update, that all 1.6 players had waited for so long. Graphics in CS is too old, but you should care to bring in CO such things imho:
- CS 1.6 movement, jumps, kreedz, feelings, etc.
- of course a new CS:GO smoke
- maps should stick to a classic look i think, but not extremely precise. It could be changed for better looking and to be interesting. For example I hate new csgo de_nuke, but I love old one from 1.6. But I like csgo's inferno...
Anyway you are on the right direction! I really appreciate, that there are such people, who love REAL Counter-Strike so much and can make such things for gamers.
I dont believe, VALVE will give Classic Offensive a chance, but I will hope for it! Respect to Classic Offensive creators and all the people who remember and LOVE true CS (1.6), so as it should be.
