I think it's fantastic that creators of older projects return for a remake but I can't lie, for a 2016 remake this is barely an improvement. One of the very first enemies you see is an headcrab with a stuck in geometry error. I get that creating or re-creating maps can be difficult or boring but how hard was it to fix that, especially when it wasn't there in the first place?

Come to think of it, compared to the original a lot of the added sections made the overall experience weaker and more frustrating. The first map starts you without the suit, one room later a soldier greets you with bullets. You don't have a gun or the suit to check your health at this point. In the original mod you got your suit and weapons in the next map without any enemies present, in this version there is a room with a suit but that room also has vortigaunts and the aforementioned crabs and grunt.
The next map still has the original suit but it's now guarded by enemies and turrets so the creator intended for you to go toe to toe with those enemies without a suit and a gun, a baffling decision.

The second map is a hellhole. The layout doesn't make any sense and there is no balance. Every corner either has a turret, a rocket controlled by soldiers or tons of enemies, some that spawn behind you, it's a mess. The worst thing is, they weren't there in the original release.
Something that was there in the original version however was ambiguity: the mod generally does a very poor job of explaining what to do next, you press a button, that button opens a door, you search for that door, you finally find it and it leads you to another button and so on. Sometimes those buttons affect different things in different maps which would normally be something praiseworthy but in this case it's more fuel to the "what do I do" fire.

This remake is also one of the very rare mods/mappacks that managed to **** me off. Generally, when it comes to maps, this version kind of ruined the balance of the original in my opinion. Most of the added sections aren't designed that well and actually hurt the gameplay. There is one new map, it's a small outdoors area that has a gargantua as a boss. Even though the map looks good as is, the small arena and the fact that the garg walks in front of you immediately and starts attacking makes it frustrating. The creator also added a brush sniper rifle that you can use but it makes no sense for it to be there because bullets cannot damage gargs.

Not everything is unsalvageable though. Some maps are decently made, both in the original and the remake. I especially enjoyed the outside section that basically has two, one hit kill turrets. You have to carefully move between shipping containers and snipe the two grunts controlling the turrets. The ending map (while has a weak ending with a five second fade to black that doesn't end the game and instead disappears after a couple of seconds) looks good. Same thing with the previous area that has constant controller spawns. The architecture is especially impressive seeing as the mod was originally came out in 1999.

In the end this is a mod I can only offer to people who enjoy non-stop action. It's both fun and frustrating. It's lucky I love gruntfests.

Some of the maps are really well-made and detailed, but sometimes some brushwork is done a bit weird, resulting in, for example, two textures overlapping eachother, etc.
I enjoy the challenge this mod gives, but the first map without hev and weapons felt a bit unfair, especially since it didn't make it clear what to do.
So far I enjoy this mod greatly though.

Really nice and challenging. Have to get it just right to make it. Requires some trial and error, keeps the adrenaline up. But there are still a few minor bugs.
