Maybe you could add a "Radiation Zone" on some key and strategic parts of the map and campaign? To get things even more challenging. Survivors upon entering these zones take damage over time due to radiation. These zones can be strategically placed on areas where first-aid, ammo stash, weapons, etc. can be found. And upon getting these resources, as expected, hordes will swarm onto the survivors. HAHA! Or, the perimeter of the safehouse is radioactive that when survivors come out, they immediately take damage slowly until they find a safe place without radiation getting clear from the radioactive zone. but the safehouse is radiation proof of course.

Radiation zones can be identified by maybe "radiation signage" on wire fences with the radioactive symbol so survivors will be notified that they are entering a radioactive area. Or posted on some walls kinda like the emergency plans as seen on malls or buildings with the indication "you are here". or like medical personnel in the past placed key warning signs of radioactive areas to warn survivors.

Tanks can also be modified. A type of radiation-infected tank can maybe deal more damage? or have more defense points? while within these radiation zones. So survivors need to, for example, lure these tanks outside radiation zones for them to have enough time (and life) to kill it.

Survivors will be tested and challenged to think and act fast. Otherwise, they're gonna die not because of the horde but with the radiation. This is Chernobyl after all.
