This mod is a mess and a non-functioning mess. I've used this phrase once before, and while looking for old goodies I came across this old load of Megabytes that I had forgotten.

The story is just strange. It all begins with the player escaping a facility killing terrorists on the way, moving through a whole city apparently occupied by terrorists, and go with the U.S. Army to defeat the terrorists in the Middle East.

The mod is frustrating. Maps can't load at times and crash due to mapping errors, the weapons are strange and act odd when they're not merely dull. Easy difficulty does not make things easier because it is so unbalanced.

Suprisingly there was a team behind this mod, yet it is quite noticable that the mod was rushed and uploaded unfinished. What are the people involved with this mess doing nowedays?

Whatever Borked Hazard does, it does it wrong. Maps, textures, animations, sounds, even the name is weird. But there's also a kind of fun experience under it all.

First things first, the maps. They're bad most of the time, the quality differs from map to map but all of them lack polish. You'll see stretched textures, incorrectly scaled brushes and other oddities. Some sections do look good and offer a fun challenge but it's generally rare.

Second, custom content. The mod has tons of custom content, some taken from other mods, others created from scratch. They're not impressive though and are often mishandled, some examples: You have new weapons that you'll barely use because they're given only once and just at the end of the final map, not the mention weird damage (MP5 does three times more damage than a Dragunov). You have re-skinned weapons but everyone of them uses different hand models so it's jarring. There are friendly grunts (who are re-skinned barneys) that's barely used or useful to the player. You have grunt models fitted to a zombie skeleton that naturally carry all of its animations, and they didn't even bother giving them new sounds so they still roar like zombies etc.

The one saving grace of the mod is the gameplay. It's basically a gruntfest with extremely unbalanced enemy placement (sometimes over 15 grunts in a section) but once you play it like a tactical shooter, covering behind objects, peeking behind walls etc. it becomes a much more fun mod. Some new weapons help with the fun factor too. I never got tired of looking through the scope and gunning down enemies extremely quickly with MP5, for example.

I have to say though, much of my enjoyment came from editing this mod a ton. I changed weapon models, edited maps to be more fair, edited the health and attack power of enemies, fixed broken text and so on. You have no idea how many useless junk files they left on the mod folder. So, you can safely take a point or two off from my score if you're playing it as is, without any modifications.

And if you're looking for a similar mod that's Borked Hazard done right, play Operation Black Thunder.

The only thing that kept this mod from getting a 1 out of 10 is two things:The first is that Borked Hazard does try with a challenging twist BUT the areas with unkillable enemies dragged it down.

It also works only with an old version of Half-Life so I can switch between the new steam and old won Half-Life.

The level design was wonky and the whole mod got buggier as I progressed. The last levels are just a pain in the ***, fighting hordes of terrorists with spread-thin health drops isn't my idea of fair.
