Legends of the 3rd Age (formerly: Blue Wizard Mod) adds two new playable factions, Lothlorien and Moria, to The Battle for Middle-earth(tm). These factions come with a fully functional AI. It also enhances the original factions with additions and changes the gameplay. The focus here is clearly on multiplayer. Units and structures are designed to fit in the original game's style.

Post news Report RSS The Isengard Spell Book

Finally, let's take a look at the Isengard spell book!

Posted by on

The last spell book to show is the Isengard spell book. The order and costs of the spells are subject to change, the spells are mostly final for the next update.

Isengard Spell Book (12 Powers):

1. War Chant (1 PP)
- Grants +50% Damage and Armor to units in the target area (unchanged)

2. Summon Mordor Allies (1 PP)
- Summons a big horde of orcs on the battle field

Editor's Comment: As Isengard and Mordor were allies in the War of the Ring, I think this spell is fit to be in the spell book. It is supposed to give Isengard a secondary viable option next to War Chant, because currently no one would select Palantir over War Chant in online play. Maybe an early summon is more viable. In the current version, this spell already exists in the campaign.

3. Tainted Land (3 PP)
- Grants +50% Armor for units standing on the Tainted Land (unchanged)

4. Palantir Vision (1 PP)
- Reveals area and units in the target area get +15% speed for some time (unchanged)

5. Industry (2 PP)
- Grants +100% production to selected furnace or slaughter house (unchanged)

6. Devastation (3 PP)
- Trees supply resources (unchanged)

7. Saruman of Many Colors (4 PP)
- Saruman gets +50% spell damage, +10% speed, -25% recharge time on his spells, +500 health and knockback resistance. His normal attacks deal splash damage and knock back enemies with force. (unchanged)

8. Fuel the Fires (5 PP)
- Lumber mills gain +75% production.

Editor's Comment: Nerfed down to 75% from +100% because it's already a very powerful spell and was moved to mid-tier.

9. Freezing Rain (7 PP)
- On activation, cancels all leadership bonuses of enemy units (unchanged)

10. Summon Cave Trolls (7 PP)
- Summons five cave trolls on the battlefield

Editor's Comment: I think it's a nice reference to the cave trolls that Isengard gets as allies during the campaign. And Isengard needs a summon as well (except for orc warriors). :)

11. The Dark Lord (8 PP)
- Unlocks Sauron in the Mordor citadel.

Editor's Comment: Finally, he will be able to join the battle field!

12. Summon Balrog (20 PP)
- Summons a Balrog on the battle field. (unchanged)

Thanks for letting me know. I don't know what happened there; I definitely wrote the descriptions but I must've overwritten them somehow :D

I wonder why Sauron and also the balrog?

maybe the orcs are fine for the beggining, as the treason of Saruman to Mordor hadnĀ“t been noted.

Saruman, both hated and feared Sauron, why should he summon the dark lord when he wants to replace him?

Why a balrog should join forces with Saruman? isildurs bane works for himself and only for himself; indeed it should be a summon for goblins, but an uncontrollable one.

I agree with you and ultimately I want to replace the Balrog. For now I left it because it's also in the main game and I don't think it's so much of an issue right now.

Sauron is there as an additional hero (alternative route to Balrog in a way) and explores a what-if scenario. If Sauron somehow got the ring, chances are high that Saruman would've ultimately joined/bowed to Sauron. Every faction has a hero that they can unlock through spell book. Who else would it be for Isengard? Saruman is already there and he won't be removed or made to an unlockable character. I still want to keep most of the original gameplay in place.

I'm shortly before the next release and this is final for the next update. The Balrog spell will likely be replaced in the future, but unless I find a good replacement for Sauron that makes sense I will keep that spell as it is.
