Description
A little background detail I'm adding is that some of the space stations spawn background ships (like this AA-9 freighter) in battle. They don't serve any purpose or use your population cap, they are just to add to the impression of civilian and commercial ships being caught up in the Yuuzhan Vong onslaught.
The Space Colony spawns a passenger ship (pictured), but others spawn different types of craft - the Cargo Station spawns Bulk Freighters, for example.
Will these ships be functional in someway? Will they be controled by the player? Or will they just spawn in as a AI units? Will they just fly around and not do much, besides getting killed, or will some be at the very least lightly armed, say with some aa turets or something?

They will be under the player’s control. These particular ships will be unarmed. Bulk Freighters from the Cargo Facility will have tractor beams. Some stations will spawn military ships and armed vessels of course.
would it be possible that you get a small amount of credits if they survive?
or something similar
I don’t know if that is possible - but in any case there will be other civilian ships that do serve a purpose on the galactic map; these are just for immersion and to add some extra detail in space battles.
