Why is in the centre of Africa a giant lake?
Sorgel dreamed of not only damming the Mediterranean but also of forming a massive inland sea in central Africa to work as a main shipping hub for the Nazi Empire. You can read about it in the Willy Ley book Engineers Dreams.
Didn't Sorgel envision both an enlarged lake chad as well as a lesser congo lake?, I seem to remember a map of the Atlantropa project where both of those existed next to each other.
