Which games are you using for unit ideas? If you aren't already, I'd recommend checking out the game Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Say hello to the TX-130 Saber-class fighter tank! This unit will be one out of a hand full of starting units for the Republic. The TX-130 will also have two different variants. One will have a top hatch turret and the other will not. The closed hatch versions are for squad 'commanders', meaning that there will be 1 lead vehicle in a IFT-X company that will give off a special combat bonus.

Also, the closed-hatch variant will be the starting version until the top-hatch turret research option has been researched. Afterwards, the standard IFT-X unit will be replaced with the top hatch turret variant on the build bar. But the 'squad commander' will still have a closed hatch variant.

Later on, the TX-130T fighter tank will be available to research. It will act the same as the IFT-X, yet the IFT-T will have better shielding and armor. However, it will not phase out the IFT-X but it will be more expensive due to the upgrade in defense and armament.

In conclusion, it will be a worthy early scouting unit for ground battles.
