Thanks for the suggestion! I will add a license.txt file in the next update with my above response.

0.1.46 is more recent. I was progressing well before I realized that I've made some serious design flaws in my original approach. So I had to overhaul certain systems, which requires me to remove other features that relies on those. So in a sense, it've regressed back to 0.1 but is now much better structured and flexible in what I want to do. 0.1.46 is the latest build, while 0.5.4 is the old version that had more features.

I added a "recent build" branch to let players test the latest build that may not be fully stable, it's not a full game yet. So I'm not sure how it ended up as a "free game" in new games section... Maybe because I didn't check the "demo" checkbox when publishing that branch? I'll see if I can remidy the situation.

Basically, if you're making a game that you want to distribute for free to others and want to use my code, go ahead. However if you're making a game that you want to sell, using some (or all) of my code, then talk with me first and we'll figure out something. As for the Google licensing, I'm not a lawyer, but that's the guise of what I'm trying to establish, and that license seemed closest to what I wanted. If you got questions, feel free to discuss specifics of licensing with me.

As for the art assets, they're not included in this license, they're separate. But creating a mod that uses the art assets is fine, as long as you don't distribute the artwork assets (i.e. only race data.xml file, technologies.xml, etc for example)

If you read my blog, the game will be going open source soon, when I'm done with the economy system. Yes, RL things have me bogged down, but the development is still going. Hopefully things will pick up soon!

You don't like the pixel artwork? The art style was inspired by the original Master of Orion game. Beyond Beyaan currently supports mods, which allows you to create new artwork without having to replace the original files. So some people may make different artwork or use pre-rendered artwork resulting in a very different looking game! In the main menu, you can see a drop-down with "Default", right now this is the only data files available. I plan on adding more "mods" or content later after the game's features are complete.

Hope this answers your question.

The demo is up, kinda... The installer version is broken, but it does install the pre-reqs. After doing that, download the stand-alone zip and run that instead. I'm working with Desura on this, hopefully the installer will be fixed soon!

Demo zip is found here: Indiedb.com

The plan for this game is to say "There's a script for that". I'm trying to have most everything run through scripts for modding purposes. For example, spy's success/failure can be calculated through a script, which can take in technologies that you've researched. Right now, I'm working on space combat, you can see that the weapons/shields are using scripts. The ship's scripts are halfway done, I'm adding ship dying and movement soon.

The game already allows you to modify technology data, and which scripts they use, as well as galaxy generation scripts, races (artwork and ship classes), star types, and planet types. You can add "Rainbow World" if you want :) Coming soon is a working space combat with ship scripts (you can create a race with special ships that regenerate health using ship scripts, for example).

My vision for this game is to have it as an "Engine", rather than just a game, where people can create their own mods or total conversions. I plan on supporting many features from Master of Orion series, as well as some features from Space Empires series.
