Minecraft

Game review

I first began to see references to minecraft at the beginning of this year, in VG cats. Next, seeing it brought up in Penny Arcade sparked a small interest in what this could be all about. I watched the little video on the site, and didn't think much of it.

Fast-forward about 9 months:

My friend, Joey insisted I try out minecraft. I was extremely skeptical, but had heard from other friends that it was a good game. I tried out everything by logging into his server with his friend's account. I spend the rest of that night, and a good portion of the next morning building an underground village.

When I woke up on wednesday, I immediately went to the bank to deposit some money, then home to purchase minecraft. The gameplay was absolutely enthralling, and I've spend countless nights, including this one, pushing my tired mind to the limits while exploring this beautiful world it's generated for me.

The game is comprised completely of large blocks, but their rigid, geometric shape is not a limitation, as expected. I've seen magma filled tunnels flowing, shooting embers into the air, cave rivers which looked like they could hold life had the game been programmed to do so, snowy forests containing a small mountain, with a tree at it's apex peeking above the clouds, and it all seemed so natural and beautiful.

The program generated content is only the surface of this iceburg, though. My friend, Joey, build an island out of glass, which housed a storage cave beneath it. I myself nearly completed a small underground "village", which had a grand entranceway in the side of a mountain, with 3 residential districts, a market, a custom's office, and even a concession bar on the way into town, for tourists. I've played worlds where giant beacons of glass and lightstone were contstructed, as well as ones with large computers.

I can only give a few examples of how splendid this game is, I can tell you, ti's worth more than every penny you'd pay at full price.
