Unfortunately for the most part, the people who were against this project were correct.
Why?
a. Although it is in fact possible to create a mmorpg using the HL2/Source engine (and theoretically possible using HL1, too) it is a lot of work.
b. Someone has already begun creating a MMORPG using the HL2 Source engine, and therefore this project would be a waste of time -- They have completed much more than we have already, they started a while ago.
My original plan was to be the first to create an MMORPG using the Source/HL2 engine but someone in the forums has proven me wrong.
This "mod" will, however, continue. Not as a mod, but as a free distributable download, Check wbsite for details:
We are using IrrLicht for dev versions, and Torque for the final release. We will not charge the first several players for membership.
We're talking about the first few thousand people who download the game and create an account will not be charged a membership fee. Chances are, we will not have to handle this many people and will never have to charge for membership.
All the original rules and gameplay styles will be the same, only difference now is that we have migrated from the HL/HL2 engine mods to full clients. This way is much better, because we do not have to require our players have HL/HL2 installed in order to join in.
Our new engine also allows us to compile for both Windows and Linux, a major plus. We should have a working sample or demo for both systems sometime this year using the IrrLicht engine.
Like I said, see the website for details.
