do these still work with other versions besides steam?

Had this mod for months playing and everything was fine. Got my M2TW&kingdoms; on gamefly. Try adding D&C and everything went to crap. Do I have to use the steam version for this to work?

I might have done something wrong but I tried to follow the directions as closely as I could. The battles work but it loops back to the previous screen when I try to start a campaign.
