The way you capture planets is that when your mothership has a hyperdrive system you can call in an orbital station, then with the stations onboard hyperdrive you place it near a planet and it begins to slowly colonize it. Word of warning though the stations themself cost quite a bit, But they really are worth it when the taxes come in :)
