Hi Balrog, moddb comments section is quite bad at sorting things so I completely missed this reply. But I'm on phone now so I can't say everything I have in mind.I just wanted to say I didn't want to avoid an answer. And to not be off, some quickies:
1.: I didn't say (at least didn't want to) that a dragon can beata balrog, I was trying to say that I like dragons better (better than any fantasy creature for that matter but I think that stands for you with the balrogs too :) ) I will think of some things to consider about that fight until I get a computer.
2.: I refuse to put the movies higher on the priority list than the books so I can't accept the argument that Smaug had only four limbs. Sorry.
3.: In Tolkien's world, dragons are highly intelligent so that last argument doesn't really stand its ground about intelligence.
Sorry for any typos and errors, I tried my best on a phone. Oh, and about errors, I'm not a native English speaker so forgive me the grammatical errors, too. If any.

I meant Gandalf became stronger. Anyway, Saruman surely lost the favor of the Valar. That could be bad for him.

I think it's important that none of them had their full power. Sauron because the lack of the Ring, the Istari because they were sent that way. But originally they're all Maiar, so it must be a close call between lesser gods, isn't it? :D

Edit: I forgot, after betraying the Istari, Saruman WAS weaker. At least as I interpret things.

Keep in mind that it's only my interpretation of the books. But according to The Lord of the Rings... Saruman was stronger than Gandalf until the latter gained the White title after the fight with the Balrog. I think the main reason was Saruman's betrayal. After that, Gandalf should be the most powerful being on Middle Earth but there are some interesting things to consider. The Istari didn't have their full power in M.E. and they were here to guide the people to victory not to win the war for them. So those two can actually mean that he wasn't the strongest, only second to Sauron to not have the ability to win the war single-handedly. Or something. Or we sould ask Tolkien. Shame we can't :(

Sorry to interrupt again.
I think technically a hobbit or a goblin could smash Gandalf's head with a club or rock... IF he gets there. Physically Gandalf is just a (very fit) old man. The thing is, they won't get there. Very few living things could get there if Gandalf really means business. Another thing I wanted to mention is that Gandalf might be the most powerful Maia from what I can tell reading everything I could get my hands on. Including Sauron. So it might be possible that anybody who's not at least a Vala would have some problem dealing with him. Except if they can sneak upon him and hit him with something heavy. But I doubt that you can sneak upon him.
(PS.: And of course Saruman was stronger at first, I know.)

One does not simply grab Gandalf!!! But I'm on the dragons' side, so... :D
Oh, and just for good measure Gandalf the Grey>Balrog
aaand... Gandalf the White>pretty much anything else on Middle Earth in the Third Age :)
