Blitzkrieg Mod

Mod review

I have a lot to say, but I gotta be brief.

The mod does way with all the arcade aspects of COH and completely rebuilds most of game from ground up, with totally fleshed out new doctrines, units, stats, and damage models. The new units themselves look gorgeous and the plethora of choices is a huge thumbs up and adds tons of re-playability. The new HD graphics for terrain and infantry is marvelous as well as the new icons for abilities and units. Along with this is many new maps adapted perfectly for the mod and also look beautiful. The crew that worked on the graphics side should be well praised for their work.

The mod also puts in new high quality realistic sound effects and new death animations for all vehicles that try their best to match their real counter parts. However I disdain the fact they reused most of the original voice overs, over and over again, which got fairly annoying and stale. In some cases, the voice acting was inappropriate for the units role. Some units don't even come with voice acting which makes them stand out like a sore thumb.

The doctrines are similar to vCOH, but, while completely fleshing them out further which allows each doctrine to be truly unique and adds a lot of replayability. However, the doctrines themselves are so ingrained and so expanded that it actually influences the type of base units you can build on top of additional doctrinal units. I really hated this fact, because for example for Wehrmacht if you do not select a doctrine you can even build a basic medium or light tank. I also initially found it confusing because some units cross multiple doctrines while others are for only one and there is no indication of saying "Hey! This unit wont be available unless you pick XXX doctrine!" unless you well, dont pick a doctrine. While this method allows for many diverse unit types, I find it unnecessary and confusing to the player, and only the units in the tree should influence unique units for the doctrine as it is clear what you will and will not get.

Last but not least, balance. The mod is actually pretty well balanced mostly only for 3v3 or 4v4. Any smaller and the Axis will just anally rape like a mad man due to less flanking options. Axis have more AOE options and they are completely superior in every way to their allied counterparts. In a mod where a single AOE shot can squad wipe this is a huge deal. The allies make up for this short fall with a smaller unit upkeep and cheaper armor and supports. This allows the allies to overwhelm its opponents with superior number of armor and guns, which is a quality in itself especially since most axis armor is vulnerable to even the basic 75mm Sherman.

Because of the nature of this mod the accuracy and range of even basic rifles (and the damage they do) the mod favors static defensive strategies which favor artillery and AOE users (which can explain the germans are OP cries). Because of this the allies need armor to draw fire and to advance with infantry support weapons or rifles to clear AT guns ASAP or be willing to sacrifice a lot for little gain. Because of this, the tech tree in this mod is dumb and unnecessary. the axis have the early game advantage because all AOE and anti-infantry is early game while the allies have the late game because all useful armor is late game.

This leds into another annoyance. The mid game light armor and halftracks are completely useless in this mod. They only shine for a brief 2-4 minutes before they are obsolete. They are either too vunerable to any AT (even the ultra light 37mm AT) or MG weapon or get so outclassed by medium/heavy armor they are just shut out of the game. This fact further supports the Axis because allied mid-game vehicle support is just useless even though they fill so many roles due to the nature of this mod.

Overall, will you like it? Probably, probably not. If you played the original blitzkrieg games you probably will. Should you atleast try it? Definitely!
