Hey there,
It's great to see something starting back up with this. Hallsworth, I'm gonna try to look through the script very carefully when I get a chance, but I've scanned it a bit and it seems to be very nice. Do you have some sort of instant messaging program like AIM or MSN? I'll get in touch with you soon.

Well, I have finished the script for episode I of Daedalus. I've sent it out to the team, so once they have gotten their feedback to me and I have fixed it up a bit I suppose I will post it as news on the profile.

It's always a bummer to see a single player mod go, because quite simply there arnt enough as it is.

Well, i've started work on the formal story script for the first episode, just curious on what u people thing the title should be. currently its "A World Apart.", which cluver came up with and put on one of the weapon model shots, so thats what im using now. Im doing the script in the same format and style that movie scripts are done in, so the mappers will hopefully have a pretty good base to go off of.

very nice stuff, all of you. I was just curious, now that cluver is doing an assault rifle, what does the CR25 count as? just a different assault rifle? i dunno about lazers, i dont really like them, but perhaps i wasnt really clear about my weapon idea. Its not a lazer, its sorta an energy weapon tho. It fires bullets that have been charged and surrounded by a ton of energy. Also, Donkey, i luv ur work. The map looks dark and atmospheric without being hard to see on, something i hate in games. cluv, dont worry bout the avatar, im sure uve been busy. blur apperently has also been busy, i havnt talked to him in days but we can only hope the site is still progressing

also, i will try to approach gamesnet or someone to try and get an IRC channel quickly.

yup yup. about the AI-12, i was more thinking kinda like a regular gun, but it fires smaller less damaging bullets that have been surrounded with a heckuvalota energy. this energy would burn, melt and generally cause a world of hurt to anything the bullets hit. ur idea is pretty cool too tho, so go with it.

ok, heres another little backstory update:

--------------------------------------------------
-----
Character Profile:
Name: Margrette Kendris
Born: Earth, USA, 2094
Information: First officer on the Daedalus. A good friend of Alex Calveres, but intensely loyal to the OSC, perhaps even over her friends and family.

Corporation Profile:
Name: Atlas Industries
Information: Atlas Industries was created during the First Interplanetary War as the private arms supplier to the Earth Space Council and the Interplanetary Guard. However, after the war, Atlas Industries was unable to sustain itself with supplying the ESC alone and branched out into public arms dealing. With the power of the ESC waneing, the Orion Shipping Conglomorate has become Atlas Industries largest customer. Currently, Atlas is creating a seires of protype weapons designed specifically for shipboard combat.

Weapon Profile:
Name AI-12(P) Energy Weapon
Info: An Atlas weapon designed for the close quarters of ship combat. Utilizing a high energy capacitor, the AI-12(P) charges "soft bullets" with a great deal of energy and heat. Although these bullets posses some meager armor piercing capacities, they are primarily just a way of delivering large amounts of energy fairly accuratly to a target. However, because of the enourmous amounts of heat put out by the combination of a bullet and large amounts of energy, the AI-12(P)'s rate of fire is somewhat slow because of the need to cool down. This weapon is an extremely compact bodied, long barreled, SMG.
--------------------------------------------------
-----

I have a very clear image in my mind for the AI-12 and I will try to get a sketch of it up by the end of the weekend so the rest of the team can fiddle with it or whatever.

just a thought, maybe since both our promo images are of the CR25, we should change one to either the new shotgun or that rifle of blur's. personally, i think the blue CR25 image is cooler but whatever. Ive finally made up my mind about the engine thing, and my vote is for switching to UT2k3.

theJabberwock Feb 9 2003, 11:33am says:

ok, here's a working profile for our main character:

Name: Alex Calveres
Born: Spain, Earth, 2101
Information: Captain of the space exploration frigate Daedalus, Alex Calveres is a promising young officer in the Orion Shipping Conglomerate. Although his father was a farmer in the Greater Madrid hydrofarms, and his mother a secratary, Alex desired to eave the increasingly overcrowded Earth and to explore the galaxy. When he was hired by OSC (Orion Shipping Conglomerate), he quickly advanced through the company because of his sharp intelegence and willingness to act quickly and unforgivingly to get the job done. As per OSC procedures, he, like the rest of his crew, is well trained in the use of advanced firearms to defend their ship from pirates. Although a somewhat gruff and to-the-point person, Alex is welll respected by his crew thanks to his skill and intelegence.

Orion Shipping Conglomerate
Information: The OSC was founded in 2087 when the Apollo Advanced Ion Drive was finished. Using this drive, it was now possible to send ships a greater distance without dangerous and expensive cryogenics. OSC quickly built up a fleet of exploration frigates, like the Daedalus, and super-freighters. Using these ships, the OSC soon began exploiting the vast resources of untouched planets and began shipping valuable ores back to earth. Although not the only company in this interplanetary shipping buisiness, Orion has always been the most prominent. However, as more and more intersystem trade sprung up, piracy became quite common. Now, OSC super-freighters are as much warships as they are shipping vessels, and the exploration frigates are not far behind.

just a few tidbits to keep cluver (and the fans) happy. Still, i am having no luck thinking about what sort of sinister event could cause the emptying of the starbase. Perhaps something that seems to be just a natural disaster, either on Earth or the starbase, but is actually caused by OSC doing some unstable, and unethical research. As the story progresses, Alex finds out the truth about this event, and has to decide between loyalty to his company or telling the truth.

The more i think about it, the more I think that UT2003 would be a better engine. Some of the ideas that i have for Daedalus would be impossible to really do in HL, and im sure u guys have the same feelings.

Whew, that was a long post. Ill try to get a few more of these "profiles" up over the next week.

boy i sure hope bluewolf is joking because if he isnt, and actually makes this inactive dispite the fact it is OBVIOUSLY active that would be so totaly disgusting i would not only leave modDb forever but would recommend the same to anyone who sticks around long enough to listen. Anyhow...

i dont really know anything about UT2003 except the fact that i dont own it and it costs like 40 bucks for a game. for a game i dont really care about, thats kinda a streach. also, from the coding standpoint, i understand that the HL engine is far more flexable than UT. of course i could be wrong. Still, i must admit that the graphics in UT2003 are pretty nice. I have no really strong objection to switching engines, so whatever.

nice concept work, both of you. just a little constructive critisism, hope u dont mind:

in my opinion, the CR25 has such a distinctive and unique design that we should base other weapon designs after it. Still, as there would be many weapon manufacturers in this world, they dont have to be all the same. IMO the_blur's new assault rifle looks a little too much like a modern weapon rather than a sci-fi weapon. the pistol looks pretty sweet and the shotgun too. i have a few weapon ideas myself but im gonna wait till the weekend to say anything as by then i can hopefully have some sketches done.

Also, i think having graphic novels move the plot along would be great, although not being a programmer, i dont know how it would be done in the HL engine, but im sure it could be done. The serial aspect of releasing episodes would also really help us get something out the door sooner while still allowing us to create a deep and interesting story. Again, I dont know how hard coding this would be.

Cluver, great thought about having earth be a sort of "clean zone". It would allow for some great contrast between the gritty industrialness of Mars (or wherever) and the clean and alive environment of earth.

Do you have any thoughts on how to progress the story from where it is in the profile?

Although i agree it isnt good to split a growing mod to much between many websites, i think it is necesarry to at least announce our mod on other sites, though we might want to wait until we have a website up. i think that like you said, just a splash image would work, but forums would maybe help us get some more interest in the mod.
