It's changed quite a bit in the 1.0 demo, the attacks all have a secondary effect. Normal shots are now double-taps with chance of doing extra damage, and the rapid fire now stuns enemies as well. I could hardly finish one level before, now it's almost too easy (normal mode anyway). Miner is still quite challenging to use though.

Wasn't sure what to expect, usually don't like that (IWBTG) style, but it's fun, respawns quickly. I like the field of vision idea in a platformer.

Hunger lock is an issue that is supposed to be changed in the next update. Meanwhile check the forums, there is an explanation on how to effeciently avoid it. Basically make a ton of food before doing too many tasks.

In the meantime there is an option to disable the music, when it bugs you turn it off and supply your own background music (works same for DF).

On that note I hope the options become available from in-game in a future update.

If you got them armored up first, try designating an area to mine, around a smaller group of enemies if you can. Try to set a large area that will make a lot of guys come running to mine, usually they will kill enemies, then turn back to the task if none are too close. After digging, they tend to head home, not full-proof but it tends to work more than not.
