Make sure you're running your game in "OpenGL" and not "D3D" or "Software mode". To switch to "OpenGL" go to "Options" click on the tab that says "Video" click on the drop down box below "Renderer" then select "OpenGL" and now click "Apply". Now you'll be able to use the commands "r_detailtextures" and "r_detailtexturessupported". If you're running in "OpenGL" and the commands don't work than your video card might not support it, or you might need to update your video card drivers. Or the other problem might be that you have a profile setup for Half-Life in your video cards control panel disabling certain "OpenGL" features, this is called "Extension Limit" for Nvidia video cards make sure that this is not enabled.
