You can put it wherever you want. It doesn't integrate with system in any way.

Just copy over same named v1.44 folders, so updated files will replace the old ones.
Just remove IP_Weapons_Ruohis_My-Key_Plague.pk3 from id1\
I also recommend to download Item_textures_v0.73 from Qrp.quakeone.com
After you unzip it with 7z, you'll get a pk3 file.
You'll find instructions for accessing pk3 packs content in the QHD readme pdf.
Create progs\ folder in the Quake HD Pack\id1\ folder.
Copy there weapon textures starting with "v_" in the filename.
These are faithful hi-res weapons textures for original view models.
Similarily, you can add back from IP_Weapons_Ruohis_My-Key_Plague.pk3 missing projectiles and pickup weapon models and textures.
Finally, there is alternative replacement models pack to try Quakeone.com
Direct download through browser from Google Drive should work fine for majority of users.
If it doesn't for you, or you have unreliable connection, you can try to:
Create a Google Drive account and copy QuakeHD Pack to your account.
Install google drive client and let it synchronize local Google Drive folder with your account.
It may bypass networking issues your ISP, local network, or antivirus software may cause.
It is also capable of restoring a download, if connection gets interrupted.
Google had some issues, for the whole day Google search was working erratically.
I've tested download links today and it downloaded as always: at max speed my connection allows in half hour. You may try it one more time.
It's not actively developed now, but I'll fix any reported error and try to keep it updated. I don't think it is outdated atm either. It was updated regularily. I just don't make a newspost each time I fix or add something minor. I've just added small update btw, it fixes lasertrap particle effect and mouse sensitivity setting not always saving properly.
Textures from Rygel's pack have higher resolution and more dirty, gritty, noisy detail look.
QRP textures used by default in the compilation, despite a bit lower resolution, have better defined details. They're also more consistent in style and more faithful.
Only shareware episode is included. You need some data from the original game to play the rest - everything is explained in the included readme.
QHD_v1.41.7z is complete pack. Rygel's Pack is an alternative world textures pack, you can use it instead of QRP Pack used by default in the compilation. Updates are for people that have previous version downloaded already, so they're of no interest to you.
Both QHD and Rygel's packs downloads are ~ 2.5 GB each.
Try unaltered original first - you'll find some help with that in the included readme too ;)
Well, this clip was not recorded with this compilation. Just saying ;)
If someone wants to make it as extremely bright, high contrast and shiny like on this vid for some reason, then it's a matter of few settings in the in game options menu.
Click on QHDv1.39.7z, then click "download" at the bottom right, then "download anyway".
Original hipnotic\pak0.pak and rogue\pak0.pak files are missing in Quake HD Pack\ hipnotic\ and rogue\ folders. Read carefully setup instructions in the main readme and put them there. Don't forget about original id1\pak1.pak too and don't forget about VISpatching them all.
When original MPs 'start' maps are missing, you spawn on id1 'start' map, but in the spawning position from included modified MPs .ent files.
You have progs.dat file added somewhere which replaces on load the one included with the compilation ( .pk3 files are renamed .zip archives ) and that progs.dat don't contain functions required by entities ( effects ) added in SMC_Entities.pk3.
If you want to just play the compilation without modifying it - make a clear setup.
If you want to use graphics replacements included in the compilation with other mods you have to remove SMC_Entities.pk3 addons what is mentioned at the bottom of the main readme.
Download new QHD v1.3 from a link on the summary page.
( I can't upload anything on modDB recently - it breaks connection each time I try ).
You'll have to downgrade drivers probably, try version 310.33 or older.
Quakeone.com ; Quakeone.com
Have you followed setup instructions from the beginning of QHD_v1.29_README.pdf ?
Did you vispatch and copy PAK1.PAK into 'Quake HD Pack\id1\' folder ?
The only knowledge that is required, is how to copy files and execute a program without being provided with a shortcut.
User have to just copy two files with original game data into vispatch folder and run once an executable to patch them. Then copy them into this pack and portable multiplatform Quake HD setup is ready to use.
If someone managed to get the pack running, then copying compressed textures packs if needed, shouldn't be a problem. Only users with older graphics cards will want them anyway ( about 10% of people downloading this pack ).
I don't use linux or macOS, so I can't prepare and test multiplatform installer and making Windows only installer is out of the question. Having to provide a path to original Quake data during installer work would be exactly as much hassle as copying them manually anyway.
The way the pack is arranged will change to be more user friendly in the next release and the readme will be shorter. For mine and majority of users convenience, installation will stay as it is, though.
I am pretty sure 'r_water 1' is by default in config.cfg. You had to experiment with it and disable it: 'r_water 0' without removing DP_water.pk3 → ugly water.
If you remove DP_Water.pk3 and type 'r_water 0' in console → no shader, performance gain and water texture opacity slider will work.
There are “Quake_HD” and “Quake” folders, do not confuse them.
The "Quake" one has no mods in it and contains the most faithful source ports.
I've added it because I wanted encourage first timers to try unaltered original.
If you want what you see on the screenshots here, you are interested in “Quake_HD”.
Below are installation instructions copied from the included readme:
Copy PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK files from Steam\steamapps\common\quake\id1\ to VISpatch\id1\
Execute VISpatch\id1\vispatch.exe to make dynamic objects visible under water surface.
Move into Quake_HD\id1\ folder vis-patched PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK files.
Execute Quake_HD\darkplaces-sdl.exe to play.
Which step is not clear ?
You need original .PAK files. You don't have to do anything with .pk3 files.
Use 7-zip.org to unpack it.
Then read QHD_v1.28_README.pdf you will find inside decompressed folder.
It works with any version you have already installed. You only have to copy some original game data into it. If you have only DOS version and have problem with installing it in the first place: Mhquake.blogspot.com
Thanks to Seven there are particles based muzzleflashes now.
There is no such a thing like Reforged weapons.
Weapons and most pickup items in this pack were made by Ruohis.
There are realtime lights and shadows... in places where realtime light sources are defined and set to cast a shadow.
I've just played this level to completion without any issues.
Maybe kill yourself to restart level and try again.
If you've made save in this level with previous release and continued with new one, it may be the reason.
This pack contains extended version of this level released by John Romero.
So you may try to remove Q_e2m6_full_MH_OoPpEe_inkub0.pk3 file from id1\ folder.
Load save before this level and play vanilla version.
Otherwise I can't help since I can't replicate this.
I don't want to use incomplete 'work in progress' beta releases that authors haven't put on their website yet, like Quake Reforged monsters skins for MPs. I want to put MPs compilations together when it'll be possible to make them perfect, without a single missing feature: texture, icon, whatever...
With a goal like this MP1 should be possible soon ( month or two ), MP2 maybe at the end of 2012...
These are original quake maps data and you are supposed to get them from your original Quake installation folder.
This compilation will works with either Rygel's or QRP world textures ( better imo ).
Using this pack with Rygel's you'll still get a few improvements over Rygel's alone: hi-res sky, better water and lava, new player model ( makes your shadow looks much better ) nice particle effects, gibbable corpses ( optional ), improved AI ( optional ), a few nicer than in Rygel's pack item replacers and a few fixes to various little glitches in both Rygel's pack and original Quake.
As for Rygel's vs QRP world textures:
Rygel's is higher-res but a lot textures are created through tiling or through up scaling and putting patterns with cracks on top ( a lot of tiling again ) as a result there is a lot of noisy patterns on the screen.
In QRP a lot of detail is put through really great normal maps, but you need to enable real time lightning and parallax ( offset ) mapping ( latest official DP release does not support ) to be able to admire how great real time lights play on them. And they are closer to original.
Both texture packs are nice, and have their own distinct style.
Agreed, as far as I know there is simply none 100% complete texture pack, and none of this level of quality. But there are also quiet a few decent modern games about space marine like doom 3, quake 4 to not look far away, so it's not that much needed. Quake one is only one.
