A World of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones)

Mod review

First of all, this mod runs beautifully, far better than vanilla warband and any other mod I've played. I have an I5 processor laptop with integrated graphics and I was running this game at 30+ FPS on highest settings with 300 soldiers in the battlefield.

This game does need some work however, though that's because it's a beta. Some of the quests aren't finished or broken.

That being said, the troop trees are more varied than a Clash of Kings and there are a lot more weapons and armour in the game which is great.

My only two main gripes with this game is that the slider for battle size is way too high. As someone who normally edits the files to allow more troops, I got a battle size of over 2800... so I'm going to have to edit the files whenever I play this mod. Which isn't a biggie, it only takes 2 minutes.

Secondly, (correct me on this if I'm wrong here) that my favourite part of Clash of Kings was that you gained more troops whenever you captured castles. It doesn't seem to be the case here, though that's balanced with the fact that renown gives you more troops than COK.

All in all, I'd say this has the potential to be much better than COK, just needs more quests, more villages and some ironing out of bugs.

It's just a shame about the drama between this mod and ACOK. I don't understand why there can't be more than one GoT mod out there and why either (and let's be fair, BOTH) modders felt threatened by each other. Nor how fans of the mod felt they had to post low reviews. It's childish and you need to grow up.

Warband: Brave New World

Mod review

First mod I’ve seen with a full world map, very cool despite some inaccuracies such as half of South America missing.

Ranged weapons work very well in battle, better than “The Red Wars”, but some (if not all) fully automatic weapons do are only semi automatic.

The bleak atmosphere works very well considering the time period and themes of the mod.

Taverns and towns are different and the towns especially (though I haven’t been to all) are well made. Some are a little incomplete however; you should take a look at Floris mod for some reference.

I like the fact that there’s a doctor in the taverns but it's difficult to find companions (though that's only a personal preference)

The amount of weapons and uniforms is amazing, very good work there.

I like how you attack towns differently, fighting through the streets rather than besieging a large castle, although the path-finding of the troops is pretty bad; when besieging Havana all my troops fell in the water.

Hiring troops for castles is great and creating your own troops for your army is a really cool idea.

It’s missing some of the staff members for your kingdom however, like a troop trainer and treasurer which makes the mid to end game less enjoyable.

It’s a little unoptimised, one of the slowest mods to load, though that’s to be expected as it’s a large mod.

Tournaments and arenas take place in vanilla arenas without modern equipment.

Could use a few more bandit patrols but that’s a personal preference.

Many of the villages are still vanilla.

Overall this is a really cool, promising mod. It just needs a more polish. Not many changes have to be made, just optimisation and perhaps updating the villages and tournaments to look more like the time period. I’m giving this an 9 because there’s room for improvement but overall a very solid mod and one worth downloading.

Chronicles of Might and Magic

Mod review

Previously I gave this mod an 8 out of ten, now it definitely deserves a ten.

The town scenes alone are enough to give this mod a ten, the models are incredible. Inferno, Dungeon and Rampart need a bit of work however, not all the buildings are there but what is there is still stunning.

The randomly occurring buildings are a great idea and I love their execution. However, you get no renown nor experience which sucks when you've just taken out 100+ imps single-handed.

Hopefully in a future update we'll have all creatures for all towns. Fortress especially needs some work, you have other flying creatures and beasts, so there's no real reason not to have wyverns and basilisks.

Some problems:
You cannot change Sandro's equipment, this wouldn't be a problem but he doesn't use his staff's ranged attack

The Dragon Uptopia... it's really well made but the dragons are too big and get stuck in the building. Not exactly a paradise for dragons :P

Magic heroes are really OP compared to might heroes. Perhaps might heroes could give attack or HP buffs to units?

Overall, a beautifully made mod but has some balancing issues and the troop trees should be expanded.

A Clash of Kings (Game of Thrones)

Mod review

This is a fantastic mod for fans of Game of Thrones and even for those who have never seen the show.

Pros:
Very few bugs
Ser Davos
Still the Warband we know and love
Quests are really fun and give great rewards
Ser Davos
Conquer Westeros and Essos either for your favourite faction or your own
Includes various extra cool features that aren't available in vanilla Warband, such as recruiting troops to your castles and enlisting in a Lord's party.

Cons:
Some factions' troop trees are limited
Sometimes quests don't work
Factions with fleshed out skill trees all, with some minor exceptions, have the same troops but with different names.
Troops of the same level but of different factions have the same armour and weapon values.

Sands of Faith

Mod review

This is perhaps the most competent mod in terms of its lack of bugs and how the new models and environments fit. It looks as if this could have been extra DLC, it's that well made.

It also includes some great features such as more starting options and that you gain access to more troops and the more castles you have, as well as recruitment options for those castles. I also like how they made tournaments a point based system rather than a simple knockout one.

However, my one gripe with this mod is the limited number of troops, weapons and armour. You have access to the best weapons and armour at the beginning of the game and they're easily affordable but the top armour and weapons are pretty bad and unimaginative compared even with vanilla Warband. Even though they're affordable, the armour they give is very low.

Warsword Conquest

Mod review

I last reviewed this mod a while back and now I feel I can fully review it in depth.

I stand by my rating of 10. A lot of people complain about the start but it's really not that difficult. Even without TweakMB, there are ways to get off the ground such as:
Finding tournaments
Grinding arena
Looting a village
Finding Chaos Zealots (I've managed to kill 20 at once with starting equipment)
Grinding Lord quests (town quests are difficult because of the map size)

Yes this mod takes some time learning how to master but once you get the hang of it, it's a fantastic mod.

Some of the towns/castles don't fit the race or are lore breaking (Nippon still has default castles and beastmen wouldn't have forts) but this mod is still under development and will probably be implemented.

What would you expect from a mod? Personally I look for:
Expansive and varied troop trees
A great variety of weapons and armour
Cool siege scenes
Interesting map
Quests

As far as siege scenes go, the art work in the majority of towns is incredible. The Dark Elf towns especially are fantastic. Many fit the lore very well with the wood elves and night goblin sieges being particularly difficult with tight pathways which can be a chore but is a great challenge.

The troop trees are varied with their own strengths and weaknesses from Chaos with incredible cavalry and infantry but only axe throwers as archers to Skaven who have crap cavalry but amazing gunners.

The map covers almost the entirety of the Warhammer Fantasy world, covering all the main factions besides the Ogre kingdoms and Chaos Dwarfs. The races not covered are available as mercenaries.

There isn't a quest line which is a shame but the mod more than makes up for it.

Overall this is the best mod in terms of diversity for siege scenes, armies and equipment and well worth a try.
