GMDX

Mod review

I've been recommending this mod to people for over a year now, and my appreciation for it has not diminished. Version 9.0 is Deus Ex at its finest, refining and updating the game to a new standard while actually bringing out its best qualities. Make no bones about it -- this is still Deus Ex down to the blood and marrow, but like you've never played before.

I could list what the mod accomplishes in full detail, but I've done that elsewhere and would rather focus on what I enjoy most about it. The main draw for me is that GMDX opens the game up for all types of players. Longtime fans of DX will appreciate how closely GMDX sticks to its roots, while new players will enjoy the high degree of polish and refinement in the gameplay, systems, visuals, and effects. Casual players will find that Easy is even more forgiving and allows them to explore at their own pace, while players looking for a challenge will find Hardcore to be a brutal, old-school test of their reflexes, quick thinking, and understanding of the game's mechanics. New menu options allow players to toggle many changes to create their ideal experience.

Furthermore, a greater variety of builds are viable in GMDX than ever before. No more can you simply think of certain skills, augs, or equipment as mandatory and others as optional/worthless. Every upgrade to your character is a meaningful choice, and allows you to roleplay and cater your build to your playstyle in unprecedented ways. A sample of changes that support the possible varieties of nano-augmented agent you can become:
-All firearms have greatly improved recoil behavior, modifications, and balance, supporting all varieties of gunslingers
-Heavy weapons take up less space and you can throw heavy objects for high damage, catering to a beserker playstyle
-Throwing knives are more potent and can sometimes be retrieved from corpses, favoring a lethal ninja playstyle
-New nonlethal options (taser darts, rubber shotgun rounds) flesh out a riot cop playstyle
-Faster weapon switching and the ability to equip melee weapons as secondaries through the "Inventive" perk legitimize hybrid playstyles
-Athletics (expanded Swimming) and Environmental Training are tied to fully fledged stamina and armor systems respectively, so your boy scout JC can always be prepared

...and many more. There's no "wrong" way to play GMDX, which is perhaps the highest praise that could be given to a Deus Ex game. Totalitarian has a deep understanding of DX's design (as well as the Looking Glass Immersive Sim philosophy to which it subscribes), and his hard work and uncompromising dedication to perfecting it has paid off for fans, old and new alike. We don't get games on this level anymore, so the fact that he's poured his blood, sweat, and tears into this project, free of cost, is really a remarkable thing. Thanks to the enhanced and augmented environmental details, simulation elements, RPG systems, gameplay mechanics, artificial intelligence, difficulty modes, and hundreds of bugfixes and undeniable improvements, I can safely say that "Give Me Deus Ex" is, as its name suggests, the definitive way to play Deus Ex.
