After 1.2 updated for me, the game will not load any of my files. I click load a save, pick my file, then it just freezes. I thought it was taking awhile to load so i came back after checking my mail and it was still frozen. What can I do to fix this?

My friend downloaded the installer, but it keeps saying that he doesn't have steam installed. He has steam and hl1 (goldsrc) but it still isn't working. Any suggestions?
