M A N D A T O R Y I N T R O D U C T O R Y

Hello everyone, this is my first real amateur attempt at writing a blog here, on ModDB. I will be doing what I like to believe I've invented called "Screenshot Storytelling". In its essence, it is a image with a description that not only describes what the image is about. I will be doing this on various mods and TC's for Arma II: Combined Operations starting now with Cold War Rearmed 2's missions. In the end, I might continue to post weekly if it works out and if the community likes my written work.

Welcome back to the past and into Kolgujev.
T'was a quiet December morning in Kolgujev, a now former Soviet military use island. Recently it was hit be a series of unprecedented terrorist attacks by a group claiming to be made up from the locals, dissatisfied because of the heavy-handed garrison tactics of the Soviets. Naturally, this type of thinkng is clearly of the Capitalist mind. Yet, they a day ago occupied and routed an outpost in the southern part of a island, an important region. This had embrassed us to the rest of the Soviet Army forces in the region. An appropriate operational plan was created by the top commanding body for this matter. Squad of nine-men called 'MEDVED' had been assembled to counter this terrorist threat which likely was stirred up by certain agencies hostile to us after our mistakes on Everon. In the files concerning this unfortunate day two person are worth mentioning, the Lieutenant Nikolay Smirnov and an unnamed Private whose quarrel with echoed throughout that operation...

The operational apporach was simple, first intercept the escaping terrorist convoy of unknown strenght and organization then proceed towards the outpost. Wipe out all of them showing that our presence in Kolgujev cannot be beaten. The squad moved into the forest near the road and laid low in their designated ambush positions. The Private understood the orders, sprung up from the ground with his trusty PKM and the objective item in a purse on his hip, sprinting towards. Taking note as to the placement, he noticed a straight bush on the left which was easy to notice from the prone ambush positions. The item was dropped.

Sprinting back towards, he noticed the eager look on the face of Lieutenant and the lowly Privates of the squad exchanging nervous looks to each other. Dropping himself on the ground, silently thinking to himself "this is going to be an emotional day." What will happen next will decide on the allegiance of our Private's delicate little mind.

Soon after, the terrorist pickup and the covered lorry were within reach of fire. Nervous, hoping he'd picked the distance right he took his left hand from the trigger and pushed the button on the detonator nearby. The timing wasn't right, the explosion happened few meters after the pickup but, it was a car not a BMP after all. The Lieutenant Smirnov ordered weapons free and hot!

To the horror of the Private, the people jumping from the lorry didn't look like those he was told of... "God, forgive me because I had no other choice!" Sudden hailstorm of Russian bullets ringed in the air, the spent casings falling on the ground. Such horrendous music has played in this road, the road of sadness and death. This is the initial result of the first taste of fire for the members of this squad.

The lorry has been reduced to a burning wreck and the passengers now no longer bear any thoughts of humanity to thoses who may encounter them as it was expected to happen. In the eyes of Smirnov it was an well executed assault maneuver, in the eyes of the Private it was an atrocity. After recovering from his shock, certain words had escaped his young mouth as a result of too loud thinking. The Lieutenant yelled double time speed to his squad, the second phase of the operation had begun.

Running back to support his squad, urging the CO to realize the impossible task.
Unnamed Private is under serious question as to being a comrade soldier of the Ground Force of The Soviet Army. Showing signs of being Capitalistically wrenched, he might be as well someone from an outside party. Wouldn't you agree with me on that matter? After all, if all of the soldiers would be thinking like he did then our sense of purpose within the greatness of the Soviet Union certainly would be directly affected.

Forward improvised motorized scouting elements has been spotted and engaged on the right side. The Lieutenant kept marking targets as it was hard for the rest to aim at the enemy hidden amongst the trees to the right. Bursts of AK-74 and PKM fire at possible hostiles up front. The Private stood up with his PKM firing, first rounds hitting the pickup gunner in the legs dropping him out of the speeding car. Concentrated fire had ignited the leaking fuel, setting the PK pickup on fire with the badly wounded driver inside. The gunner was lucky, his fate was quick and painless death. Silently laughing to himself for a moment how the quatermaster would only provide them with these fine leather gloves during winter days. Surely they could have made standard issue for MG operators...

Finally reaching the grounds of the Outpost, attacking the foot defences of the terrorists. Nikolay Smirnov instructs the Private behind him on which target to kill first. The reality of combat is hitting them hard as the bullets once again start the horrendous music of death. The are no higher emotions. In the end, it is based only on hoping for your bullet to hit the designated flesh of the enemy before theirs do the same. The Private surely must had noticed by now this shocking fact.

People tumbling to the down, ducking from the bullets flying everywhere. How dramatic for the squad. LEUT Nikolay Smirnov's left eye was pierced by a 7.62x54R SVD round fired by an hidden insurgent marksmen. Pouring rounds into the suspected opposition in the ruins ahead the Private watched with visible concern as some started to disobey orders, doing what they should not do in this situation. The sheer volume of this make him hope for a second that they might just surrender under this increasing psychological pressure. Another few seconds after this thought another 7,62x54R bullet got him in the head piercing the rusty helmet. This was the unoffical telling of what happend during that sad and cold December day...

The operation was deemed a partial success, Private was KIA while saving Smirnov from a hidden terrorist marksmen. Lieutenant Nikoly Smirnov died later due to heavy wounds. The remaining others will be held accountable for their incompetence. Control over Kolgujev had not diminished during that month in spite of the initial wrongdoings of the unnamed Private. All is well within the garrison.

And that's how our hero became such an unnamed person as he is now, folks!

Really enjoyable read :)

You make such a simple moment as a gunfight over a hostile convoy then taking over their outpost so deep in story. I've done this many times in games but it hardly ever got as enjoyable and thrilling as reading your blog. You nailed down the feeling very well without getting overly serious or dramatic or childish.

You focus on both the big picture as well as the small one. Not just some locals not just some military unit by accident being there you actually connect and elaborate the big picture then transit over into the depths of the main characters mind. Both peeks the horrific one in the middle and the dramatic one at the end work out well so did the slower and calm beginning.

Last but not least you got style and the vocabulary and knowledge to pull it off.
"Such horrendous music has played on this road" and hopefully on some more blogs to come :)

More blogs like that overall not just from you would aid a lot to make this place more special.
