I'm currently working on a simple game using UDK's own assets, it's a story driven game about a man's hunt to get his wife and freedom back.

Starting Work in UDK

Periapsis Blog

With the story outlined, it was time to decide how to kick the game off. Since the game is set in a metropolis, i thought a good place to start was at the bottom of a skyscraper. So i penciled out a rough draft of the layout and set out a few gameplay elements to start us off.

Since i'm only using UDK basic assets i had to explain why the main character was a robot...not an easy task when your set in the near future. The most plausible way i could think to do this was to call it some sort of powered up armour. Not a perfect explanation i'll admit but it'll be good enough for now.

So with the basic layout on paper it was time to search through UDK's content to see what i can use, straight away i could see myself running out of assets before this game is done. I'll cross that bridge when i come to it though. So i gradually worked my way through building the first level up, adding lighting and animations as necessary.

To be honest, to start off i was having a bit of trouble getting the lighting right. I've always know that lighting can make or break an area. No matter how nice you dress it up with models, bad and unbeliveable lighting can spoil it.

The next major element that i'll be using in this game is flash. Since it was supported in UDK a few months ago i've been messing around creating menus but more on that tommorow.

Yours Sincerely,

Periapsis
