Once i had finally decided to get serious about making a game, i sat down with a blank piece of paper. I thought about what type of game i wanted to create, i knew it had to be a fairly short development period because university was about to start back up in a couple of months.
So i decided to set a few ground rules:
- Only use the basic assets within unreal
- Trial a couple of levels on a few friends first to see if it was worth finishing
- The main hook of the game should be the story
So on this blank piece of paper i created the Protagonist and the Antagonist. I gave them a deep background together covering many years. I then proceeded into the present day and used the background i created for them as motives for their actions in the present.
Once i had the basic plot points set out and all the major plot twists listed, i decided to fill in all the gaps. I then got a friend to check over the story and advise me on anyway he thinks it could be improved, even now though the story isn't set in stone. Just a few days ago i add a major plot turn that i really liked, so in order to integrate it into the story and make it feel natural i had to change a little bit about the characters and flesh out their motives some more.
Speaking honestly, really fleshing out the characters is one of my favorite parts about creating stories. I have been doing for years, whether its been really basic stories that i made when i was 10 (Such as a series of short stories, the first of which was called Niko Latino and the Magical Computer...) through to just about a month ago when i put pencil to paper and created another world that might be my next project...
