Once upon a time, I was a blogger and amateur modder here at ModDB. Now I return, to report on the latest and greatest mods, indies, and anything inbetween. I am a cynic Christian. I try very my best to be honest, no matter the cost. I am now a freelance games journalist but I still do an indie dev gig on the side.

Report RSS Being a Christian and a gamer, at the same time

I realize many people, at the second of seeing this -- will expect I say something like "I actively avoid anything with an M-rating" or "If I see something that says it has sexual content, then I immediately avoid it", or maybe even "My favorite franchise is Nintendo. You don't have to even see blood in some of their games!"

No. This is not me. I play Mass Effect, I am looking into playing Dragon Age, I love the Dead Space and F.E.A.R. franchises (except for F3AR, for obvious reasons) because they so assuredly will give no safety hold on how shit-scared they will randomly make players scream for their mommy (unlike me, who is apparently immune to video game horror games). I've probably clocked in about over 200 hours for Team Fortress 2.

And you know what? I'm also reading through the Bible, cover to cover (Note: I'm not bragging here. I hate bragging. The thing I'd least want to do, most of the time, is brag. When I completed the first seven chapters of Deadspace 2 in three hours, I wasn't as excited by the fact I had just pwned the necromorphs, as I was disappointed that the game was honestly that short). I have found a way to look at gaming, and be in a Christian mindset at the same time. This often gets me into arguments when faith is involved (or lack there of), but I usually actually rather have not much different from most gamers. The fact is, I'm mature enough to tell what is right and wrong. Is my main Shepard in Mass Effect a good guy? Yeah, he is. When I played inFAMOUS, was I a hero first? Yes, I was. I also let the rich guy die, without Scott Shelby helping him in Heavy Rain (and on a side note -- Scott Shelbey is cooler than Batman, when he's behaving as a protagonist. Don't deny it. Just accept it, or you will find several penguins on your doorstep); have my female Shepard take almost every renegade action (partially because Jennifer Hale sounds 10 times better at saying the renegade lines), and have been enjoying no longer having to stop and heal every random civilian I see in inFAMOUS (really, at first it feels nice, but I look forward to -- if I get inFAMOUS 2 -- having the aura of healing rather than just one jolt of healing).

So really, while I have made this big little blog post here -- being a Christian is a personal matter. Yes, it's mainly why I hate Bayonetta (they're outright insulting the whole of Christianity. I'm supposed to ignore this? How about the fact one button literally just made her do sexual poses? Or that she does a strip-tease in the credits? There's a thing called "being tasteless". Perhaps Platinum Games should look up the definition?), and it defines my definition on several real world views and paradigms. This does not mean I will allow myself to be pigeon holed.

I am, who I am. Take it or leave it.

Fairwinds.

P.S. Some smart aleck gets the idea to post sacrelig or insults in the comments -- you are getting reported to ModDB staff and you will kiss your sorry arse griefing goodbye. *Holds Bat-Shark-Repellent ready*

Nice blog. I have a similar stance, but you articulate much better than I could =P
