NotHarm - - 12 comments @ Raytheon's M-60 Patton Upgrade Program

The M60-2000 was from an era when people still had warfare and tactics from the cold war in mind. Before Germany sold a ton of their Leopard 2s that had been surplused, many countries like Spain, Greece, and Turkey relied on tanks like the M60 and Leopard 1. So the idea that you could bring your fleet of old tanks up to almost par might have been an attractive idea. However the Leopard 2s were pretty much handed out which made the whole idea moot along with several other projects to modernize the M60 for the export market.

Like wise, the M60T is aimed at countries like Turkey and Greece who still have a large surplus of M60s or countries that cant afford to upgrade to the Sabra.

Actually that's a Zrinyi I which existed as single prototype with a long 75mm gun while the Zrinyi II saw in service and armed with a single 105mm howitzer. Both variants can be easily identified by their riveted hull where as the TAS 44M was planed to have a welded hull.

On the outside, the basic ZTZ-99 and ZTZ-98 look like a cross between a T-64/T-72/T-80 since it has a low that low profile that soviet and Russian mbts were known for while having a similar looking turret that is shaped similarly to the one on the Abrams. With applique armor and ERA applied they do look different tanks entirely.

However Kalga pretty much answered your question. However to add to this, modern tank fighting is pretty much however can score the first hit. You cannot afford to go into a fight and expect to take a hit if not multiple hits, you need to stay mobile while using cover and concealment to avoid losses. Tanks in the 80s intended for fighting in the Fulda Gap like the M1 and T-80 were built with this in mind.

Iraq had several types of T-72. They T-72Ms built from spare parts, T-72Ms imported from countries like Poland and Czecholslovakia, and they had the domestic Assad Babil.

Pretty much stationary tank out in the open is vulnerable to an ATGM or AT fire whether it be a clunky T-55, a T-72, M1, Leopard 2,T-80/90, or T-14.

The early Shermans were okay when they went up against the Panzer IIIs and Panzer IVs. Although it's not like anyone had anything better since British Armor in Africa couldn't deal with them and the Soviets had to relay on Lend-lease to supplement their 57mm T-34s. The76mm variants and the HVSS upgrade made it a pretty formidable tank when sent up against the German heavy armor in mass, plus unlike the heavy over engineered Tigers, the Sherman can cross bridges. They can also 1 on 1 the T-34, but it comes down to who can fire the first shot.

Kind of like the Leopard 2 which still has yet to see an actual shooting war against other tanks.

Tanks are only replaced until something more modern is needed or until the design has been exhausted.

For example the M26 Pershing supplemented and eventually replaced the M4 Sherman. It was late for WW2, but in time to see action in Korea. It's 90mm gun could punch through Panthers and T-34s alike. Eventually improvements were made it became the M46 Patton, the M47 Patton, then M48 Patton. As the T-55 became more prevalent the use realized the 90mm gun was starting to show it's age. So final variant of the variant of the M48 had a 105mm stuck in there and the eventually it was replaced by the M60 which is more or less the same thing. Except the M60 saw numerous improvements like a laser range finder and Thermal optic system only to replaced by the M1 series which was made in response to the T-64/T-72/T-80 series of tanks.

Like wise the Soviets made the T-62 in response to the M60 and the Chieftain. However the T-64 was better tank which lead to a new family of MBTs like the T-72 and T-80.

The M1 is going anywhere unless the US sees a need to design a new tank. Until then most countries are just going to improve upon what they already have.
