Dominions 4: Thrones of Ascension

Game review

This game is a must play for anyone who is a fan of TBS games. I have often described Dominions 3 to friends as "Risk times 12", and this game lives up to its predecessor wonderfully.

The game provides a vast array of choices in not just the nation you play as, but also the way you can use each nation, leading to thousands of different ways to play and win. It's a game where you never run out of new options.

The only real downside to the game is that it does have a rather steep learning curve, and new players are almost certain to get crushed as they play against more experienced friends, but I find that once you've got the hang of it the vast difference kind of plateaus out, and then it is down to individual strategy and tactics.

Some complain that the armies are not entirely balanced, but it's actually something I enjoy. Armies in the real world have never been totally balanced, why should they here? Using one of the "underpowered" armies merely means you will have to be extra observant about what tactics you use, and be very careful about who you engage with before you are ready.

Finally, the only thing that could possibly improve on a game of this magnitude is user input, and Illwinter has done better than that. The extensive modding process is amazing, and I can see that there are going to be hundreds of viable mods for this game coming out over the next few months, a few of which I intend to make myself.

No game is perfect. Dominions 4 has some flaws in its gameplay, but I think that the overall experience of this game warrants the full 10/10 rating.
