i wouldn't be surprised if they consume blender
Doesn't really effect anything really. It's just some people trying to get by in the economic crisis.

Do you know, thats EXACTLY how my tutor phrased it when he saw it :P.
I wouldn't see Autodesk taking over Blender, there's no money to be made - its free for one.
And I don't mind it so much, Max and Maya now have some features shared which either one needed to borrow from the other, and interoperability is great too!
I don't get why autodesk has to have 3 programs that all do the same things but in different ways. It's just weird. And it's even wierder when people use multiple of them at once.
