ashton93 - thank you for your thoughtful response. It wasn't my intention to "troll," but to discuss a conundrum I've wrestled with for a long while. I have been a gamer for a long time and, as you say, the balance between realism and gameplay is difficult to find. This is especially true when it the game is based on a specific historical period. I suppose I over-analyze games because history is another long-time interest of mine.

The argument that a game can bring awareness is certainly defensible and for the most part I concur. I think that both games and movies - if made properly - can help bring history alive in a way that a textbook cannot. If after playing your game a user's interest in the material is peaked I'd say you have justified the game - besides the entertainment value the game brings.

The premise of a WWI mod seems fairly weak to me. Gameplay options - that reflect the conflict with any accuracy whatsoever - are very limited. Where as WWII could be explored in terms of individual squad combat, WWI did not, for the most part, involve these tactics. Infantry either sat in squalor-ridden trenches or were slaughtered wholesale when they charged into heavily defended positions. So in a game based on this conflict, either the players do very little (ie, live in trenches and underground fortresses) or they run around in the open, as they do in other games, yet for this purpose they do it in a grossly inaccurate fashion.

Honestly, the idea for making WW1 into a mod seems callus. Of course, I suppose you could make that argument for any game based on a historical conflict. It's just that the First World War was especially horrible in comparison with any conflict before or since.

Additionally, I find it odd (and rather offensive) that you incorporated a quote from George W. Bush during the moments of your video.
