KatPhish - - 39 comments @ The Northville Tunnels Project

I grew up in Ann Arbor, and during highschool we would hear stories of that place all the time. Kids would go there at night and explore the tunnels and come back with scary stories.

One story depicted a long tunnel at the end there was a 50 foot drop off. Some would say they saw homeless people in there. Others would claim to see ghosts. Driving by it during the day is spooky enough, very few of us would dare venture on the grounds at night.

So that means ur offically dead right?

No, it means we are officially using a different platform other than Half-Life 2.

Its tough. On one hand this idea should work in source, on the other there is no way this could work with source. If source servers have to be restarted every 35 minutes because of a memory leak, how can the simulation in the least appear continuous?

There is a way to map objects positions in a database and update those positions once a second. We can also spawn a player where he was when he disconnected from the server. We can also dynamicly change objects properties, allowing for the transfer of objects into other objects. For instance, you pickup a bottle from the ground and take it to a "machine" to change it into a money object. All this is possible, however the limitations of the source engine prohibit any realization of the environment to support the premise.

This could only work on a very small scale. 10-20 players, not the 64 players we would like. And even 64 is far to limiting. We need the capability to allow thousands of people to connect at once. And then you need the space to hostt them all. This can only be realized by reducing the scale, however that puts restraints on the level of detail of the buildings, forcing us to not be able to enter the buildings and close them off as desired.

its also not a "trailer", just a video.

Trailers get thier name from being shown after a movie.

Its been many moons since any real activity has shown itself. Worry not my good people, summer will be over soon and development will pick up again like last winter.

Alienware is building me a super computer so I can compile the main map with great ease. More people have been showing up offering help with our development. Ktrain is well into the next version of the main code. And hopefully all of you are still building your lots for inclusion.

Our server has been down for quite some time now, however I am aware of this now and will get it back up. I will be setting a date sometime after Labor Day for us to meet on the server for testing, a general meeting to get to know your peers, and to discuss development plans.

as far as i know, there is only one real game built on source that has been released to the public. Some vampire thing. Go play that until something else is released.

I would rather not have little picture updates, but instead be told when I can download a working client and play online.

Your letting us rip the edge of a wrapped xmas gift and peek inside. I say plow us over with a beta release.

However it goes its not for us as clients to argue or demand, all we can do is take what we can get. Right freeloaders?

We might come across a solution to speed the proccess, but for now there are a lot of required steps to getting your building into the map.

When version eight is released, I will host a dedicated server for everyone. Please be respectful of others while on the server to avoid being banned.

Garry's mod is one of my few top favorites. If you havn't downloaded and played yet, what are you waiting for?

what im scared of is lag caused by so many people and high detail buildings and if its going to be set at night the lag goes way up:(

The object control system will help check the lag. There are building restrictions in place. We are using daytime at the moment.

Sounds great, how the hell is it all possible. I mean I'm no coder. But for something like that it sounds like every time you log on you would have to download a hole new world just to play!

We aim to update the game at least once a month.

after reading all ur webby and forums .. i dunno whats right and whats not.. i mean i still cant see if its real money uve gotta pay to build or not

If your statement was in the form of a question, then my short answer would be no, you don't have to pay real or ingame money to "map" for this mod.

If you want ownership of a lot in the map, to be able to vote laws in and out, to have police arresting abilities, you will have to pay land taxes in real or ingame money.

KatPhish - - 39 comments @ Smallfort County

Who will decide on the laws? Will a sort of city-cousel be elected/selected? Or will the devs make the laws?

The landlords will make and enforce the laws. Landlords can submit a bill in the forum for all landlords to vote into law.

If someone breaks a law, how will they be caught? Will a dev just put them in jail or will a cop have to hunt them down and arrest them?

All landlords will have the ability to hold someone against thier will for however long. They will have to walk you to your new jail cell.

If someone is arrested will they have a set term to serve? And when they are released from jail will there be any restrictions on them? (ie: real life convicts can't vote)

Everyone arrested for a crime will get thier time in court in front of a judge. The judge will decide your fate. They will then have a record.

Will there be courts/judges?

Yes. We plan to support a court system.

Will there be a death penalty?

That is something the landlords will decide on thier own.

How will new user-created content be added if you never take down the server?

If the server doesn't crash within a month, we will restart it with new objects and buildings.

i was just thinking, if it is real are you going to go indepth as to like break-ins, window gets broken, stays broken, alarm or secuirty goes off, resident informs polive, forensics, window repairer bla bla bla and such or will it still be semi-arcade-ish?

Although it is possible to incorperate such detail into a map, the scale we will be working on limits the amount of such detail. The map will compile faster and gameplay will have less video lag if the rooms did not have real windows.

Please don't make any breakable windows as the server would not be resetting or changeing the map very often, if ever.

It's an incredibly ambitious idea... it seems a lot like the game 'Second Life'. What I can't see, however, is how you are going to include these features.

I intend to incorperate functions from many different games such as: Simcity, The Sims Online, There, Natural-Selection, amoung others.

How will 'coding your own objects' work? Are you going to create an ingame scripting language? Or will people have to submit their code to you, and then you add it to the next build of the game?

Valve has documentation in the sdk outlining new weapons and objects. The submitted code will be tested on our test server before integration into the live server.

How do you plan to save people's inventories/money when they log off?

Player data will be saved in a file on the server, much like a banned file including the steamid, last coordinates, and other information vital to operation.

How many players do you plan to support?

We are aiming for each server to hold 255 people, and there will be a seperate server for each country. When a server is full, you will connect to the next server with the lowest ping.

Will players ever have to pay cash (for any reason)? I have a feeling commercial mods are a legal gray area: you might want to check with Valve if you do plan to charge real money for anything.

Anyone can download and play the mod for free, however if you want to own a lot in the map you will have to pay land taxes to pay for the server (about $24 per year).

It seems like an excellent idea... I'd love to code some kind of games console to go in the game or something.

you can code mini games and machines and submit your work for inclusion. Once its in the game you hold exclusive rights and can sell units for ingame money (possibly to pay your land taxes?).

Will it cost real life money to be part of the game or the player will start with a basic amount and have to work and sneak to make more to be able to buy someting better?

A normal player can download for free and play the game. They start with $0. You will have to figure out how to make money in the game. You can either rent a space to live in, or build on your own lot.

ooo this could be sweet. Do you plan on scaling down and only using models? You can get vast distances out of maps with a tiny scale (100 miles=1 unit in hammer) and really slow movement speeds (would appear fast as the ships are tiny compared to normal hl2).

I can see how this would work quite well :)

KatPhish - - 39 comments @ Alpha1 Realeased to builders

If you map for hl2 you can build your own building for inclusion in the one and only map. This release is for builders to walk around the exsisting map to see where they want thier building located.

There are 9 lots per block, and 9 blocks make up the entire map.

Changes from the first alpha include no weapons upon spawn. All you can really do is walk around and view the landscape.

Can ISP's host there own localised servers?

If you are asking if people can host sfc(smallfort county) servers, then no.

Once the beta is released, it will not include a "Create Server" function. The server will require a file that only the developers will have.
