Genius idea about accelerometers for 3D motion capture. i think i know exactly how to develop your idea!
Accellerometers from RSOnline are about £10 each
They could communicate with a microcontroller
Which then sends the data via USB/Serial
The Data is then intepreted by a python script in blender
Points on a rig are moved to match the points in real 3D space desegnated by the accellerometers
Of course, you would have to calibrate the Accellorometers before doing any motion capture, but thats quite simple.
