My problem resided in the kingdoms launcher app. Starting it now through having renamed the hyrule folder to crusades and just using the regular launcher.

Try starting the game as administrator. worked for me.

I have the same issue... I was able to play it about a month ago.. and having made no changes to the files it still stopped working for me. Only thing that I can imagine to have changed would be if they patched the original game, which kind of seems wierd seeing how old it is. Does anyone else have this issue? and if so.. do you know more than me about it?
